It's the way we played 3 at the back with the players that we had which was the issue for me.
Whilst I could see what he wanted to do we didn't have players with the skill sets to play it the way he wanted. Either at centre back or wing back. If only the owners had given him a budget of around £150 million to get in players with the right skill set and a wage bill to match we might have been automatically promoted.
His reticence to play a system that utilised the strengths of the players that we had in a back 4 was his biggest weakness IMHO. When his process worked and we were able to move the ball quickly it looked good. However tactically astute opposition managers knew how to hurt us. | | | |

I don't even think it was so much the players, just the pace and intricacy.
It's probably easier to get away with three at the back if you're not playing lots of risky short passes in your own defensive third, or pressing to win the ball back higher up the pitch.
The way we tried to do it we just left ourselves wide open to mistakes or counter attacks, hence the atrocious defensive record in both Russy seasons. | |

Three man defence only works when you have two hard working wing backs and a solid midfield … we never had the first and rarely had the second.
Towards the end of the season Wood matured and his understanding with Cabango improved, Fulton added a defensive element to the midfield and Ntcham with Cooper and or Cundle and an improved Grimes were able to form a more consistent midfield.
Bottom line … Three at the back needs quality wingbacks. |  |
