The official line is that he feels it would be disruptive to the Labour Party at this time and to be fair that is true because I could see Burnham being very popular in a leadership concert. So that brings us to the second reason which is Starmer is running scared.

Burnham is very popular up here He would be attractive alternative to Starmer Starmer and his acolytes running scared His time is up and he knows it Meanwhile the country bleeds

Vlad the Impaler would look a more attractive option than Starmer.
He has been and will continue to be an absolute catastrophe for both this country and the Labour Party. It will take them decades to recover from him.

You’re totally correct about Starmer being a disaster but maybe with better (not difficult) leadership as shown by Baedenoch it could be possible to turn his party around.I once posted that Starmer was a Marxist and that was laughed at but looking at the way he’s imposed his policies on the country I’m more than happy to repeat that description.
"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

Labour Councils?
The majority are. There are also 3 Conservative and 1 Lib Dem.
Down with me, East and West Sussex are combining and voted for the delay. East Sussex is led by a Conservative minority - 22 Conservative, 12 Liberal Democrats, 5 Labour, 5 Green, 2 Independent Democrats, 3 Independent and 1 Reform UK
West Sussex is very blue - 40 Conservative, 10 Liberal Democrat, 9 Labour, 6 Independent, 4 Reform UK and 1 Green.
I'm not sure why Starmer is getting the blame for this one not going agead or how the Tories can blame Labour when some of their councils are doing the same.

Councils should not have the right to request to delay or postpone elections in the first place and Starmer should have the moral fortitude to tell them it’s not happening.

I absolutely respect your position and I must admit, I’m pretty uneasy about it too.
I just guess that felix must have forgotten to put a chart up un May 2021 when the Tories did exactly the same thing, effectively setting the precedent for what’s happening now.

Maybe they shouldn't have the power JON but they do and they have asked.
And as Gwyn says, it's pathetic the Tories complaining when they've already set the precedent. Also when there are Conservative councils making the request, not just Labour.

Were the 2021 cancellations to facilitate the creation of new unitary authorities. I thought all 2021 elections were held over from Covid, but there was so much going on then I could well be wrong.

They were for unitary authorities too.
I think it was the first time hence the comments on the precedent being set

There’s been a precedent for the delaying of elections during major periods of turmoil for a long time though (wartime etc) and there was a major global pandemic going on at the time. Still far from ideal but you can understand the reasoning since people weren’t allowed to leave their house.
It’s a big difference to what the government are doing now. It just gives the impression they are running scared and want to cling on to power as long as possible.

That was understandable at that period of time, there's absolutely no excuse to do it again now, it just proves that Starmer is a control freak and a shitehouse, disgusting.

They give the impression of a government who are winging it and haven't a clue what they are really doing.

63 Councils though? I mean a handful you could say okay we'll cut you some slack... People shouldn't have to just shrug their shoulders and say : "Oh well 5 years of feet dragging by the Commons and the Boundaries and Electoral Commissions, but never mind let's just cancel local elections and put up with the same useless cretins who can't organise a piss up in a brewery for another few years" The process is there to prevent gerrymandering, though the previous changes would have favoured the Tories, especially in true blue heartland of counties like Sussex which you've mentioned before I think is one merger pushing for a cancellation. The national picture is different - Conservative and Labour approval ratings have now BOTH plummeted and both parties know they'd get a hammering at most of these elections which the Tories did of course in 2023. So I was a bit suprised at Cleverly's comments the other day but a stick to beat Labour with is still a stick at the end of the day... I'm also suspicious of the impartiality aspect of these and other quangos in the times we live in but that's a whole other can of worms...

I think its 29.
As I said, I'm not comfortable with it but just from local knowledge, I understand why it's happening my way.
