Punk Rock GOAT. Great story.
However the proper goat Joe Strummer, Dee Dee Ramone, Lydon ? Nah let's give it to Captain Sensible. Seen the Damned loads of times and they never disappoint. Excellent guitar player, the rest of the band are always first class and Vanium crooning like a great one. Tony Hadley was a big fan!

Lad who played some guitar for us on the last album ( sounds grand it isn’t ) is his personal roadie. Sean his name is, mad as a box of frogs, they suit each other. The captain wasn’t allowed in to the USA this year because he refuses to have a covid jab, Sean was none too pleased, big bucks even for a roadie these days.

Would The Stranglers be classed as punk ?

Hugh Cornwell on Sound of the Seventies yesterday seemed to distance himself from that phrase , he prefered to use a pub/rock band description of themselves .

JJB the bassist won’t have it any other way.
He insists they are.
Horses mouth can’t argue with him.

Jean Jacques I believe , was a bit handy in the martial arts too .

Way back in the day , The Stranglers played the Top Rank on the Kingsway , probably part of the show involved confrontation and winding up the crowd to get reactions .

Brunel played the part of the pantomine villian well . it was a great night .

Yes I was there. Jumped into the crowd. I believe he is a Black Belt. He's a really good classical guitar player also.. Listen to him speak, a very articulate guy.
The Stranglers were a bit older (especially Jet Black) than most of the Punk bands at the time and came from the Pub Rock scene. Along with acts like Dury, Eddie and the Hot Rods etc. I think Punk gave them all a vehicle to push their music. Some of their music had the raw energy but also a Doors like feel.

Memory starting to get a vague these days but recall a support band , possibly that night , The Skids , later to become Big Country . They sounded great doing their set .

Dave Greenfield , keyboards , died recently alas .
As you mention , Jet Black is now 84 so in the mid seventies he would have been in his 30 s.

It was an American band called the Dictators . They were
blinking loud. Me and a few mates stood right by one of the speakers.

Oh to be young and daft!

Skids/Big Country supported The Stranglers , Cardiff Top Rank Sept 1978 , I was there for both shows , got them mixed up , long time ago .

Noticed AC/DC played The Swansea Top Rank , Feb 1977 .

7th Dan Black Belt in Karate. Degree in history too.

Cornwell was in University (Biochemistry-Bristol) with an old boss of mine .

Very much like a raw 'Doors". JJB's bass made their sound with Greefield's keyboards.
