House of Westminster renovations. Monopoly money 17:28 - Feb 24 with 567 viewsReslovenSwan1

https://www.hansardsociety.org

There are two options available

a) The outrageous option A. £15.6 billion

b) the Absolutely obscene option B. £39.8 billion

The fact that option B is even considered is an outrage.

These figures have sort of leaked and looks well dodgy to me. This could be the next HNG mess up.

Option A involved a " full decant" where the HoC and HoL are relocated for a few years. Option B is a " partisa decant " a gradual fleecing of the taxpayer.

Where do these figures come from. £15 billion ? £15,000,000,000. Wow for one building . The taxpayer is being sold a pup.

If the MPs and Lords refuse to 'fully decant' they will add a whopping £24 billion to the bill. That really would be taking the urine. £2000 per UK taxpayer.

The upper figure is 2000 times the construction cost of the Liberty stadium and the Senedd in Cardiff and more than Cross rail.

We are being fleeced.

It is probably the most recognised landmark in this country. It has to look top notch.

It is expensive and you can bet it will go beyond any cost mentioned now. It always does. Holyrood anyone?

The Senedd upgrade £4m . I am sure you agree with me that is a bargain compared to this.

i recent years we have has some massive controversies and Taxpayer plundering.

The 2009 Banking crisis was daddy of them all of course. Then we had Boris and his Covid stunts. Some of the new Kids on the block play the populist card but do not often refer to the taxpayer. I doubt Farage or Rupert Lowe would be any more in the taxpayers corner.

I read a while back the restoration coast would be £1 billion. These figures are horrific and may have been leaked to get the public on side.

About £80 billion can run War time Ukraine for about a year including weapons according to the media.

The costs are truly horrendous, but given the nature of the the work and the skills the craftsmen require to do the work I’m not surprised it’s extortionate.

My take on things is that the building should be preserved and turned in to a museum. Madame Tussaud’s attracts 2.5m visitors each year and the minimum charge is £27, so we’re up to at least £67.5m. I’m sure more people would pay to see the Houses of Parliament, so pitch the price right, get the tourists in and use that money towards the running and renovation costs. Preserve the stone work, inside, furniture, etc, do what needs to be done but that’s it. Have organised tours etc etc, but we should forget about running data cabling, and all the other stuff. Build a new parliament nearby and future proof it.

Almost what I said in a previous thread on the subject major.

At that time the estimated costs that i'd seen were £23 billion. So I automatically doubled that so we'd end up with the best part of £50 billion. Some may argue that figure but when you consider the work would take a decade at least it becomes reasonable.

I said it should be turned into a museum as well. It would be one of the best in the world. But the replacement parliament should be built in the midlands. And it could probably be built for £10 billion. And that could include accommodation for all the MPs saving an absolute fortune in ongoing expenses.

What better way to spread power out of the centre. And what a financial boost for the area it would be built in rather than yet another enormous spend on the richest part of the country.

The last paragraph, I remember a similar argument when politicians were canvassing for Welsh devolution.

Yes it was a great historical day and the end point of 600 years of struggle for an issue identified following 1000 years of fighting and violence after the Romans de camped.

Semi Autonomous rule has not worked perfectly by it plenty of English people seem to want to come to live in Wales.

Hardly any government worldwide is popular. No difference here but talking of abolishing the Senedd needs to be discounted by Welsh people.

"Semi Autonomous rule has not worked perfectly by it plenty of English people seem to want to come to live in Wales." and no Welshperson ever left Wales to live & work in England

If you hibernate in the Neath valley real life in Wales passes you by. You only get your information from the Internet and YouTube and we all know that you have to be intelligent to interpret fact from fiction there.

I remember it well.

In the original white (or green - I can never remember which is which) paper the idea was to refurbish accommodation in either the Brangwyn or City Hall in Cardiff to have a chamber for the Senedd to sit. And believe it or not the budget was £3.75 million.

That amount sounds ridiculous now.

Agreed of course but why is the UK Government located in a museum historical building which needs billions for Maintenance...

The Anti Senedd movement have labelled the £4 mm an outrage but nothing to say about the House of Westminster costing 10,000 time more.

There should be a national outrage if the MP s and Lords refuse to " fully decant".
