Ukraine War and George Orwell 15:22 - Aug 18 with 518 viewsJACKMANANDBOY

I listened to a report on the status of the Ukraine War on BBC Radio 4 at 1pm and suddenly realised I was 'listening' to Ninety Eighty Four.

In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell described war as a mechanism meant to be continuous rather than won. The radio report described how NATO was supporting Ukraine to keep fighting rather than to win the war.

Orwell observed that wars are typically framed as necessary self-defense against a maniacal enemy. The usual line about Putin needs to be stopped or he will take over neighbouring counties and march on Europe was repeated.

War propaganda, lies, and hatred usually come from those not fighting. A retired UK general was in full flow about why we should despise Russia.

Orwell was a genius at seeing the manipulation that accompanies war. You can hear the discussion on BBC Sounds at about 1:20 on the World at One.
