COOPER OUT
at 16:19 16 Jul 2020

Before the playoff final Sky showed a graphic with Wycombe being 23rd in League 1 for passes, short passes, possession and moves of over 9 (I think) passes and something else.

You can't argue with its effectiveness, but not sure how that fits with 'our style'.

Interested to what makes you say it's an inferior team to last season - Potter had to rebuild after relegation and change the playing style and mentality. Whilst he had McBurnie and James, Cooper has had a full year with Ayew and then half a season with some promising Premier League loan players, plus the likes of Rodon and Roberts with a full season of experience under their belts (though I'd agree with anyone who says that Roberts has gone backwards). I don't think the squad is any worse (or better) than last seasons.

I never see the point of using points gained in one season to the next, it doesn't take anything else into account like relative difficulty of the league. The best way to measure progress from one season to the next is to look at league position.

Also, at the risk of sounding like a Potter fanboy (and I know you can't measure this), but he did have to pick the club up after relegation, deal with the turn over of players and change the style of play from Clement/Carvahal.

I'd like to see Cooper given another few months - I think one of our problems has been so much managerial turnover, but I'm not optimistic things will change. Maybe Cooper will get some good prospects in on loan and get sacked in the winter, allowing our new manager to use them to full potential and take us up...

All-time stinker XI

I remember Vasquez being absolutely slaughtered by Williams at the end of the first half of an FA Cup game against Birmingham. You do see teammates have a go at each other, but it was clear Williams had no respect for him at all.

I didn't mind Shechter - he tried, and I loved the fact he eventually scored (albeit with a huge deflection). The odds on us scoring 3 and the scorers being Rangel, Shechter and Tiandalli

Swansea City Agree Wage Deferrals
at 18:07 26 Apr 2020

For Premier League clubs whose main income sources are merchandise and sponsors rather than tickets, assuming they can cover their running costs and players took a voluntary paycut, could the owners then take that out as a dividend at the end of the year? I appreciate this probably applies to Man Utd, Liverpool and a few others only.

What difference would say, Paul Pogba taking a pay cut make to a factory worker who has been furloughed? Unless he had written guarantees from the Glazers that it would be used for charity/support, I wouldn't take a paycut either.

Sure, some footballers probably are doing naff all with their wages during this, but some are giving to charity or supporting the communities they represent. Asking all Premier League footballers to take a pay cut (which will probably just end up in the owner's wallet) is silly - I think it's best to let players get their wages and hopefully use it for the right reasons.

Would 'some' say that, or would you say that?

It doesn't even make any sense anyway - they've won two European Cups and three league titles since then.

I think there's a bit in Ashley William's book where he talks about getting ready to confront Jordi Gomez about getting Nathan Dyer sent off vs Wigan in 2011, before realising it was something he'd praised Gomez for doing when he was with us.

Players from all clubs at all levels dive and exaggerate contact. People claiming that one club's players are more prone to diving is ridiculous.

Liverpool tonight
at 19:08 5 Feb 2020

To take Liverpool as an example, this summer they had Alison, Fabinho and Firmino playing the Copa America, Mane and Salah at the African Cup and van Dijk, Henderson and maybe Gomez at the Nation's League. Since then they've played 6 games in the Champions League (with at least another 2 to go) and 2 in Qatar, as well as various reserve teams in the domestic cup.

If there was a way that the Football League could make money from a winter break (it's no coincidence that all 10 Premier League games are on TV), there probably won't be one - it's not a matter of the other leagues coping or not.

Until then it's up to Klopp how he manages his team. He's hardly the first manager to 'disrespect' the cup and won't be the last. If he and his team of fitness scientists think a fortnight off is the best way of keeping his players fresh for the Champions League, going the season unbeaten and reducing the risk of injury during Euro 2020 (i.e. managing his club) he can do what he likes.

And I say all this as someone who cannot stand Liverpool.

You should be more upset that we let Messi go, rather than the board having spent the money due to come in.

Welsh Rugby Programmes & DVD
at 11:38 11 Dec 2019

Appreciate this is a mostly football forum, but no idea where else to ask!

I've got a programme from the 1963 Wales v New Zealand test, as well as a programme from the Welsh Seven-a- Side Tournament from April 1965, held in Swansea.

I also have a VHS of the 1989 Five Nations and DVD of the Welsh Grand Slam of 2005.

Does any one have any interest in these? I'm not looking for any payment, just looking to get them to someone who has in interest in them or is a collector.

I should add both have some writing so are not pristine by any stretch. Happy to provide any pictures/take any questions.

Best Swansea City Moments of the Decade
at 10:38 5 Dec 2019

At the risk of sounding a bit spoilt, the Capital One final as a match itself was a bit of a dud. Yes, it was our first ever major trophy, but after the first 2 minutes it was clear we were going to batter them.

For me Michu's goal in the semi should be in there - Chelsea were European Champions and the goal itself was stunning.

Games you're at mean a bit more, so I'd say Sigurdsson's winner at Anfield in the 3-2 win. Great moment against a very good team, especially as I thought we were going to lose it after Liverpool had come back from 2-0 down. Also it was the start of a turn around after a shocking run of results. Llorente's thumping header in the same game was a brilliant goal from a great move too.

Hillsborough: David Duckenfield found not guilty of manslaughter
at 22:30 29 Nov 2019

Two quick questions:

Could you show me any 'facts' of a compensation culture in Liverpool? Not one-off cases of morons in the local paper, but something endemic the city which sets it apart from other cities.

Can you explain how a criminal law case against Duckenfield, bought by the Crown, would get the families compensation?

Yep, but if you want to be pedantic, it's equal with Phil Neal who won 4 European Cups with Liverpool.

Edit - came across this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_Cup_and_UEFA_Champions_League_win if you've got time to waste. Who knew a San Marino international had won the European Cup?

Programmes
at 11:56 18 Nov 2019

Feel free to move if this isn't the appropriate place for this.

Going through some old stuff yesterday, I came across the following programmes:
Tranmere vs Swansea from 2004 FA Cup
Sheff Wed vs Swansea from 2009
Preston vs Swansea from 2011
Blackburn vs Swansea from 2011

I've also got one from Swansea vs Peterborough from the FA Cup in 1965 but it's at my parents so I can't remember if it's the home or away game - I think it's the away game.

I'm not looking to get money for them. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll get them sent next week (I'll have to pick up the Peterborough one, but I can't imagine anyone is in a rush to get them!).

The championship
at 14:22 4 Nov 2019

I think you're right that the standard of the Championship seems lower than last time (though obviously, it's hard to quantify it), but oddly, I think the gap between the the Championship and the bottom half has closed quite a bit.

Obviously it's a small sample size and it's a long season, but Sheff Utd are doing very well and Villa and Norwich aren't being outclassed. Obviously last season Cardiff and Fulham came straight back down, but Cardiff did incredibly well - given the squad, I thought they'd be hammered each week and down by March - and while Fulham went down, they were a shambles on and off the pitch.

Not sure what - if anything - it all means. Probably that we're all looking back at things through rose tinted glasses and thinking everything was better in the past.
