Where were we? – Preview

Great to have the LFW previews back.

I didn't know that Jarrod Bowen stat. He has absolutely no business playing at this level!

I think City has probably left it too late to get any benefit from trying to overturn the FFP rules.

The PL is a membership organisation and the members are bound by contract to be governed by the rules of the organisation.

The PL charged City with breaches of FFP from 2009-2018.

The statutory limitation for contractual breaches is six years. And that runs from the time of the breach, not the date the breach of contract was discovered.

So even if City successfully challenged FFP in the courts it wouldn't help them to recover any damages from them breaking those rules before 2020.

The French don’t mess around. Bordeaux relegated to the sixth tier of French football for financial irregularities

Surprisingly little coverage of this in the English media

I don't think the club has ever denied knowing what he was doing.

If he had been at it without the club's knowledge they would surely have had to have sacked him by now. Instead they've had his back all the way.

The club's punishment came from the EFL.

This was the FA looking at the conduct of the individual.

I would say he got away with one.

That's ridiculously lenient.

The Canada ladies coach and two administrators were banned for a year for a one-off incident.

Eckert has multiple offences and he is reported to have leant on junior staff to do the spying for him.

IMHO he should have at least been banned until the end of the season.

The fallout from Man City is spreading.

The Law Society will be looking into any misconduct City's lawyers might have engaged in to facilitate their cheating.

And City might have to pay the PL £50m in legal costs.

Julien Stéphan Interview

Regarding your point 2.

I don't think he meant that we need to be Spain-lite. At least that's not how I read it.

I think what he was trying to emphasise was the understanding between the players.

So, yes the game has changed and become more physical, but there are ways to beat that provided you work cohesively as a team and both understand and stick to your instructions and gameplan.

And without wanting to turn this into another you-know-who thread. Anyone who isn't fully onboard with the team plan might be viewed as a weakness instead of a strength.

I wish he would stop referring to "top, top, top players."

Triggers my Monsieur Redknapp PTSD.

Mind you, Arry never went as far as the four "tops" that JS gave Lamine Yamal.

He must be a top ,top, top, top player

Hopefully he was changing in a separate room.

Otherwise Celtic would have left themselves open to some serious safeguarding questions!

I thought the questions were reasonable.

Speaking as someone at the older, grumpier, more cynical end of the age spectrum I thought those were the questions that needed asking.

Ben handled it all very well.

In fact it made a nice change to hear someone answering the questions they are being asked instead of trying to be evasive or just push out the things they came to say regardless of what the question was. It was a really good interview.

You might be overthinking what was just a weak attempt at smart-arsery on my part.

FIFA doesn't like politics in football but is ok with nation states owning football clubs.

I don't see how a nation state buying a football club and investing its national prestige and influence in that enterprise is anything other than political.

As for Burnham, I think that's being a bit overblown.

It's true that AB was a Manchester MP and subsequently Mayor of Manchester at the time Abu Dhabi was investing there, but the Conservatives were in power for much of Man City's ascendency and Abu Dhabi couldn't have done much in Manchester if Cameron, Boris, et al weren't all on board with it.

I do think Burnham's comments the other day about the hearing did lean too much in City's favour, but he immediately got plenty of pushback from his own party let alone the opposition.

As for the Saudis and Newcastle? Dunno! But it does again demonstrate how our government risks embarrassing itself by allowing foreign nations to own major clubs in our national sport.

We have been doing business with the Arab nations for many years. Long before they decided to use sports to try and clean up their image. I can't see that all coming to an end just because City's owners have been caught diddling the books. Although if we do start looking seriously at possible criminal charges then that really could blow up into a diplomatic nightmare.

Fair points.

I had forgotten that Tony Bloom has brought his particular brand of data wizardry to Scotland. Maybe he can crack the Glaswegian duopoly. Although they seem to be cracking nicely without any external pressure.

But whatever became of that promising young Hearts manager?

I had completely forgotten about Atalanta. You got me there.

So our government can't interfere if a foreign government wants to buy one of our clubs.

I think FIFA might need to take a look at it's rules

However this all pans out I think the global football rules need to be rewritten to prevent sovereign ownership of football clubs. In fact it's crazy that it's allowed at all. In most countries around the world football is the national sport.
