He's only started in 7 games to date and has played for a mere 600 minutes in total this season. Meanwhile Saito has started in 14 out of the 18 games, when available for selection, and been on the field for over 1000 minutes.
Smyth has managed to score 3 goals and 1 assist in that short period. He should have been afforded much more playing minutes this season, but instead we've chosen to persist with the ineffectual pair of Saito and Dembele. Dembele having been given nearly 1200 minutes' playing time.

Perfectly penned as usual.
Kudos to those who continue to travel away in such numbers. It's a pity that it hasn't been matched by the performances on the field of late.
Baffling all round; from continuing to pick players who are patently out of form, non-appearances of others who are deserving of more minutes, culminating in Monday's team selection. [Post edited 31 Dec 2025 18:26]

Well done, Emmerson. That bodes well for the future. At his age, the National League is a very good standard and he'll learn and grow much more quickly than playing easy-osy development squad games.
If there are no league two takers for the likes of Adamson, Bennie, Smith, Akindileni and Pearman, then the club should be trying its darndest to get some of them out on loan at National League level. [Post edited 31 Dec 2025 16:45]

Both tough games.
I'm looking forward to the Norwich game as they, like us, signed a forward from league one in J Makama who has successfully stepped up to this level and has scored 8 goals. He's a unit and will be a handful. As much as Sargent is deemed to be having a "poor" season, he's still scored 7 and provided 3 assists. Expecting a few goals to be scored by both sides in this game.

Totally agree with you.
However, I thought that Chair has been put out to pasture along with Field, Smyth and Cook, as none is compatible with the free-flowing, cohesive football that is now the club's totem and is being executed to such precision by the likes of Varane, Saito, Dembele, Vale etc on a consistent basis. That's hardly a ringing endorsement of our much-vaunted development set-up. One player from that age group is playing for relegation-threatened Morecambe in the National League. Many others playing at clubs in tiers 2 and 3 of the non-league pyramid.
There are at least three previous players who were rejected by QPR but are now featuring for better teams in the Conference league. Players being: Gubbins and Kendall at Southend and Drewe at Woking. There's Arkell Jude-Boyd, another of our former young players, now in his second season at Cheltenham in league 2.

This. Was afraid to state the same. Like you, I'm not convinced JS is the final arbiter on who actually plays. The non-involvement of Kolli and Smyth adds credence to that whilst the likes of Varane and Saito continue to be selected in spite of poor performances now being the norm from both.
Field should have started in place of Varane and Smyth ahead of Saito. Dembele initially at 10 with Kolli replacing him at a later stage. |

I believe that Esquerdinha has been touted by the development PR machine as the next cab off the rank. If that be the case, then he is way short of the two that figured prominently in the championship for us last season and in a far more pressurised environment: Kolli and Morgan.
When played in their best positions, they remain the only two real prospects from that crop of players and the powers-that-be need to accept that and focus on further developing these two, as they are the stand-outs.
It's one thing making errors, but last night and against Ipswich, once beaten, Esquerdinha appeared to lack the recovery speed required to at least attempt to make a recovery tackle or commit a foul. I'd be surprised if a League 1 team were to be interested in him and agree to playing him regularly, as that is a tough and physical league. [Post edited 30 Dec 2025 11:42]

The same consistent information was provided by more than one solitary outlet in Belgium, corroborated by reliable sources on matters QPR, such as Dave McIntyre. Unless you can provide evidence to the contrary that he's been signed for significantly less, then I'm inclined to believe the likes of the aforementioned. [Post edited 29 Dec 2025 8:21]

I watched that game and yes, he fluffed his lines on both occasions with poor option selections, but at least he was involved in that game and wasn't a bystander like Saito. He also didn't let his head drop, as evidenced by his direct run when he switched to the left, which resulted in him being fouled in the Boro penalty area.
Without Smyth, we would only have two away victories to date. For a bit part player he has had far more telling moments in away games than either of the much-vaunted Saito or Dembele.
Here's hoping that these two actually show up against Pompey, when selected from the start, and begin to contribute with their own telling moments in away games. [Post edited 24 Dec 2025 18:22]

Totally agree with your observation re: Saito's and Dembele's propensity to either give the ball away cheaply or be easily dispossesed when passes are played to their feet due to their inability to largely withstand physical challenges made by the opposition.
It's most marked away from home, where to date neither has really excelled especially when they have been selected to start. |

You may as well add Ilias Chair to that dismissed list too. In fewer games and significantly fewer minutes played than £3m Saito, Smyth has contributed more by way of goals.
Recency is such a wonderful quality.

Why's that? I sincerely hope you're right about this.
For mine, this is one player who is as good a two-footed player and is comfortable crossing with either foot, as you'll get in this division. His left-footed cross for Pompey's 2nd goal at Hull evidences what he is capable of producing. For that reason, I'd say that he poses a greater threat than either Gray or Mavididi and is massively underrated.
If Mbengue masters Murphy in the manner that he has the other two and in an away game, then I'm a complete convert. [Post edited 22 Dec 2025 22:04]

Absolutely no chance of going up. I'm just enjoying the ride and the fact that we are well clear of the lower reaches of the league. That's where I feared we would be this year, so well done my team in proving me wrong.
I suspect that positions 4 to 6 will be occupied by the likes of Southampton, Sheffield United and A N Other by the season's end. [Post edited 21 Dec 2025 22:11]

I like the full-back pairing of Mbengue and RND but to suggest that we are more solid defensively isn't borne out by our poor defensive record to date: fourth worst in the league. In fact, we had conceded fewer goals at the same stage last season.
For mine, the key differentiator is that we now have vastly superior forwards in Kone and Burrell compared to anything that has preceded them for quite a while, and they are ours. The two have contributed to over 40% of our league goals to date. [Post edited 21 Dec 2025 21:49]
