Hang on.
He inherited a team which against the odds stayed up on the last day of the previous season, and arguably our best player from that season walked out on us (Berkovic), and he had little to spend.
We were a highly entertaining occasionally brilliant shambles under Souness.
He made some horrendous signings (Lee Todd most notably) but he quite notably got us up the table.
The following season was undeniably a bad one; the Kevin Davies money was almost wholly wasted and Carlton Palmer downed tools.
Overall though, I think he did well and he left Hoddle the bones of a half-decent team. |

Might be my imagination, but we seem to have a bigger allocation for West Brom away than has been the case for the last few seasons. |

Take my seat in Family Stand
Either go home in a massive strop, or stay in Southampton for a few hours and celebrate (probably at Carlton Place). [Post edited 6 Oct 16:58]

The Maple Leaff opened for the 96 game. Unofficially…….
Unfortunately I didn’t start going in there until a year or so afterwards to have known what a top place it was. |

I was too young for 1984, sadly.
1. 4-0 win at Fratton - 2019
2. 3-0 in the Cup at the Dell - 1996
3. 2-1 in the Cup at St. Mary's - 2005 (last-minute Crouch penalty) |

The 4-1 at Fratton was utterly horrendous.
Weirdly, the 1-4 at home in the Cup in 2010 wasn't as bad; they were two Leagues above us, David James kept them in the game at half-time, and the noise when Lambert equalised was incredible.
The 2-2 at home in 2012 was gut-wrenching when that arsehole Norris scored in injury-time.
The 0-0 at home last season was terrible; we just didn't turn up and could easily have lost. |

The problem with these games is that no matter how shite Portsmouth are (and they are really shite at the moment) they always really raise their game in these games, and doggedly stay in the game.
We played really well at Fratton at times last season, but we just couldn’t get the two-goal lead we needed.
I think this will be another tight game, but am hoping we can come good and win it in the last 20 minutes when Portsmouth have run themselves into the ground. |

I don't know why they would be punished at all.
They stopped Liverpool winning the League for a number of years, so I don't see what harm has been done. |
