Australia were knocked out on the 3rd of July and by FIFA laws it is compulsory all players have 3 weeks holiday before returning to training so he would only be allowed to return on the final day of the Austria trip so the club probably told him just to stay away untill the club returns back to Swansea.
Eom is the strange one. South Korea were knocked out well over 3 weeks ago (and were knocked out 2 days before New zealand aswell) so it poses the question to why is Stamenic at the camp but not Eom? [Post edited 22 Jul 10:02]

Every club outside the elite are selling clubs even those who have ridiculous financial power behind them like Newcastle are finding that out in recent times.
To expect Swansea or any championship club to hold onto their best players is simply ridiculous. The last few non parachute payment teams to get promoted all had big sales (~40million intotal) in order to fund themsleves and Improve their teams.
Coventry- Gyokeres + Hamer
Hull- Lewis Potter + Greaves + Philogene
Sunderland- Clarke + Stewart
Selling players is absolutely the right way to go about getting promoted and its basically the only way you can do it. |

The same Whittaker who never actually wanted to come back and even posted on bis social media at the time about it? He was only called back so the owners could cash in him aswell.
He then refused to play for us in order to try and force through a move. That doesnt exactly sound like somebody who was going to positively affect us. |

When he joined we had 0 senior GKs, 0 recognized ST, 0 Wingers, 2 Dms (one of them being Grimes who had a year left at the time and was very likely to be sold), Naughton as our only RB, 2 senior CBs (one being Bennett).
All you have to do is go back and look at the team we put out against Blackburn it was really laughable it really was a team destined for relegation.
I can put away my biases and dislike for Martin in the pursuit of common sense and clearly see that the position he left us in was 30x better then the one he inherited.
As for our worse managers since relegations i'd say it goes.

Matos is too esrly too judge but so far I'd have between Luke Williams and Cooper.

We also had players who were far too good for the level aswell? Grimes, Roberts, Guehi, Ayew, Gallagher, Brewster, Gyokeres, Manning. These are all guys who have played or gone on to play in the premier league.
I certainly have no love for Martin aswell and he deserves (and certainly gets) his fair share of criticism due to his sheer arrogance/stubborness not only as a person but also hus style of play. However, the one thing you definitely cannot say is that we were in a worse position when he left then when he came in.
I give him credit that he played a major role in giving this club 40mill+ in saleable assets which we desperately needed at the time just to keep the lights on and it's hard to forget our first double over them lot.
When you consider their roles and expectations and limitations placed on them, Martin was a far bigger success than Cooper. One was tasked with getting us straight back up, while the other just had to keep us stable and financially afloat. One did their job and the other failed. [Post edited 30 Apr 15:34]

We didn't expect to be in playoffs this season though so if we got it of course we'd see it as a success.
However, with the parachute payments and players we had back then it would have been catastrophic if we didn't get playoffs at a minimum.
The job of a manager in my opinion is one of two things. Instant success (i.e promotion/surviving relegation) or building/leaving a good foundation in place so the club is better off then when you took over it. Cooper failed on both accounts and had 0 respect for us by having interviews before the play off final. [Post edited 30 Apr 12:56]

Steve Cooper left absolutely nothing even remotely good. He blew all of our limited budget on top loans who were no doubt cracking players but gave us absolutely no long term stability or assets to build on.
As you said atleast Martin gave us Downes, Wood, Obafemi, Ntcham and Piroe who were all sold for a decent profit and kept the lights on. He also oversaw one of the greatest moments in the clubs history with the doube doube.
Steve Cooper's one job was to get promoted and we all tolerated his terrible mind numbing football in pursuit of that. Yet he failed miserably twice and then had the audacity to have interviews before the playoff final.
I'm glad his career has turned to a complete failure since because the long term damage he did to this club took us a while to recover. |
