I am a new sign up here so please excuse the post if asked previously!! Born and bred on the Island in the mid 50s and living there until I left school in 75, I often wondered why islanders chose where their local football allegiances should be. It could be one of three though mainly blue or red and white!!
For me oddly enough it was the journey over and the city itself. Red Funnel ferry trip up Southampton water and past those fantastic liners was infinitely preferable to that dreadful grey port along the coast. The only saving grace in Portsmouth was the trolley bus system they had then and lobbing coins at the mud larks below the harbour station. Southampton Central station was a place to behold and the dock railway system fascinating to this kid who fondly remembered trips to a model shop in Northam in the early 60s!!
It was generally thought East side of Island went Blue and west red. Family traditions too I guess. Not so sure now what the split is. Probably all wear Scouse shirts sadly.
Any one from “Vectis” on here do let me know as don’t get over that much now that family have departed!!
