A statement win. Whilst we did not create lots of chances we played with endeavour and recovered well after their goal. We had the desire and composure to keep playing and in the end we took our chance.
I thought we nullified them and outside of a few long throws they did not really threaten. Moss did help to keep Scott Morris quiet, as did Burger who worked tirelessly until he ran out of steam who helped to support him defensively down our left.
I suspect over the next few games there will be different teams, with players playing different roles. Moss and Burger in from the cold tonight, who will it be on Tuesday. A special mention to Gilmour whose technical game has improved no end. When we did play through the press it was noticeable the space him and East had to run with the ball.
A week now to get ready for three vital games. Three wins could see a gap open up and put the pressure firmly back onto York.
The number 10 position is probably our weakest area in the team. Lots of options but nobody seems to nail down the second position alongside Rodney. I thought Barlow would have pushed on after his strong finish to last season. I'm not sure its a role that suits East. Him and Gilmour have a good partnership so why break it up to solve a problem elsewhere?
We tend to make a lot of change quite early especially in fatigue positions such as wing back and wide forward. How many times have the likes of Rodney played a full 90 minutes? We have hardly played recently and have a Saturday off next week.
Play your better players and then if we have a comfortable position they can be taken off. We have plenty of players to manage minutes without having to resort to a Brackley away. Every point could be crucial.
I'm really looking forward to the game today. Hopefully we can put on a show.
Neither Berkoe or Galvin have offered much offensively. I suppose a wing back who is equally adept both attacking and defending is not likely to be available. As the Hartlepool game illustrated we need another more physical presence to provide a different option up top.
As an England supporter you would be pretty annoyed to fly out and see no play due to the pitch being a lottery. Tongue had a good test and Bethell played a good innings to guide the chase almost home. Pope's second innings average would suggest he would not have been able to do the same.
The thing with Burger is that he did not feature much earlier in the season but from his interviews you can tell he has not sulked, he has knuckled down and taken his opportunities when they have come. He may not be a regular starter but we will need everyone to contribute.
Pope had to go for his own good. Potts should have played instead of Jacks and Bethell and Root could have filled in the Jacks overs. Four specialist seamers and Stokes would have bowled most of the overs.
No suprise Archer has broken down. Three matches on the bounce with no real warm up was always a recipe for disaster. It sounds like he will be okay for the T20 world cup.
They were generational talents. In my time only Gough and Caddick come close but not for the length of time Anderson and Broad. We were blessed and are now seeing the void they leave.
I was struggling to see any other candidates and hope that the additional responsibility might 'focus his mind' a bit more. But anyway what do I know about cricket, I don't even like golf!
At least Jacks has got a hundred in each innings! Although in reality he has been set up to fail and It is not his fault, as he is not a frontline red ball spinner. At best he is a sixth option in the white ball game.
Stokes being unable to bowl again has left three seamers. Australia played off Archer and made hay against the rest, although Carse has been slightly more accurate this innings. With Lyon locking down at end going at 2.5 an over they can rotate the seamers and build pressure. We have not been able to maintain any pressure.as the bowlers have been milked on what is a flat deck.
Ashes series away seem to be the end of a cycle and serious questions need to be asked. Is Stokes capable of playing the all rounder role? I am not sure his body can cope anymore and it is not through the want of trying. Who is going to bat at three? What is happening with the spinner? What happens next with the seamers outside of Archer? I suspect that it will be the end for Wood as well.
My two pennies:
- Give Brook the captaincy. - Give Bethell the summer at three and get him working on the bowling. He could be a servicable part time option. - Rew the elder becomes the next cab off the rank in the middle order and he can keep if Smith's form continues to wain. - Haines and McKinney are opening options if we move on from Crawley or Duckett, who has also had a barren spell of late. - Ahmed needs game time and I would look for him to slot in at seven, which allows four seamers to play. In the UK it is rare that a spinner has a massive impact so a combination of him, backed up by a few overs of Bethell and Root should be okay. - The much vaunted seam attack has not been great. Archer is your spearhead and Atkinson is probably a good second choice, especially in English conditions. Carse/Tongue/? who are your stable of younger options? Get the seamers bowling in the championship early season and see who is bowling well. Cook is too slow on flat international wickets. I would give Potts another go as he is durable and usually accurate and can fill the 'hard yards' role.
The company who runs it have admitted that the fault was they used the stump mike at the bowlers' end rather than the batsman's end, which is why it did not line up.
