Thread | Exciting and Terrifying in Equal Measure

I can’t remember such an action (and hopefully quality) packed transfer window in all the time I’ve been following this crazy, beautiful football club.
It is genuinely exciting. We have a progressive coach who the players seemingly love and who now has “his” squad built for him and around his philosophy.
But it is also equally terrifying. We are not (financially at least) a massive club with attendances and commercial revenue to match. Yes we have rich owners but there are spending rules that if not adhered to can lead to all sorts of massive problems (see Leicester City).
So, what if it doesn’t work? What if our coach is poached? Is there the financial foundation in place to ensure that if this fails he we don’t fall foul of any financial regulation?
I guess everything is a gamble in the championship and not everyone can do a Hull and win promotion on a shoestring. Whatever. The pressure on Vitor is enormous. Get this right and next year we’ll be spending even more money. It’s just the opposite that has me terrified. |

The one at the Vetch which still stands out for me was the Soton game in 1982 when Kevin Keegan (RIP) was with them.
I remember getting there about 45 minutes before KO (evening game) and having to struggle to get up the ramp onto the NB which was already rammed. There wasn’t a space in the ground and when they read the attendance out it was received with a massive laugh all around.
The place held just over 26000 at the time and the tannoy announcer goes “tonight’s attendance is 17865” (or thereabouts)!
I still reckon there were over 30000 in there that night. |

Can you imagine what it’d have been like yesterday. Pre-match on the beach, stroll over for a spot of lunch and the game then back onto the beach afterwards. Utopia! |

That used to happen a lot with even stands from race courses being repurposed for football use.
And didn’t we use the old multi coloured seats from Morfa athletics stadium in the old East Stand at the Vetch? |

Had a quick look online at now things are progressing there and was surprised at the size of the site.
Got me thinking it would have made for a fantastic stadium site for us. Imagine a 25000 seat stadium close to the city centre but right by the beach and what an utterly unique prospect that would have been. I can’t think of another ground like that but am happy to be proved wrong.
Obviously it could never have happened as the money from the shopping park was needed but it would have been a hell of a stadium site and sight. I wonder was it ever considered when sites for the then White Rock were searched for? |

I’m mindful of completely derailing this thread but just to say that the haematology team at singleton are excellent and at the cutting edge of treatments.
Unfortunately I have quite a complex medical history (mainly cardiac related along with a history of near fatal blood clots) and therefore not all treatments are suitable for me.
I’ve found looking after myself as best I can l, avoiding infection and staying as healthy as possible are my best options.
Now if only our beloved football team can deliver a season to remember I’ll be extremely happy! |

I have multiple myeloma Rich. Diagnosed in 2014. Stem cell transplant the following year then nearly 8 in remission before I relapsed in early 2023.
Chemo not an option for me due to other issues so I’ve been told there’s nothing else that can be done and am therefore terminal.

I have a blood cancer (relapsed 3.5 years ago).
Been told I’m terminally ill so to attempt to prolong matters I’m avoiding most contact with the outside world as I have no immune system. Sometimes I yearn for the bad old days of 2500 at The Vetch and my own barrier on the NB! |

Same here - we’ve not renewed (on health grounds - I doubt I’ll see the season out sadly) so you can rest assured that this time next year we’ll be promoted on the back of the most entertaining football ever seen at the Liberty!! |

The punishment isn’t just designed to penalise Soton though - it’s also a deterrent to any other club thinking of doing it. Ergo any weakness now will lead to an open house on spying with the reward more than worth the risk. |

We were sat right in line of the Lino and the incident. He saw it clearly but immediately looked down at his boots rather than actually do something. It wasn’t the only blind eye he turned all game either, missing at least 2 clear offsides and Woods’s assault as well. Sheer incompetence or worse? |

When we played Bury in “that” game, we stayed in the then Reebok Stadium hotel after it. i was imagining having a room with a pitch view and spending a “happy” hour there with the Mrs while watching the game! OK a happy 3 minutes then… |
