Yes someone was talking about this (can’t remember if it was a manager or a newspaper article). It’s actually likely to cause more injuries as like you say teams tend to bring on fresh forwards or midfielders and the poor defenders are having to deal with them when they’re already tiring.
Yeah I did that Plymouth-Hull one. It IS pretty knackering even if you’re not actually playing. Do think it’s a disadvantage if you have that more often than other teams across the season.
But is a nightmare for the fans too.
ETA according to the thread on it, it’s Derby and Bristol City that have six double away games in the three game weeks. Other teams only have three of them (courtesy of Stowmarket).
I think one issue was he’d only sign for short extensions on his contract. So if you are paying someone for eighteen months you don’t want to invest six months of that with them on loan.
I think he wasn’t really ever willing to commit to us so it was a good deal to sell him.
It’s not the same game now. You can’t compare the two. The pace, the physicality of the game (not tackles but how much more athletic they have to be, the high press. Remember Stan Bowles on Superstars, he was hopeless compared to the really fit guys.
Also the players from then probably played half the time on painkillers and barely have knees.
Comparing us to other Championship sides’ injury records makes absolute sense. Looking back into the mists of time is a waste of time.
It’s so annoying when he shouts the name of a player just taking a routine shot. That combined with Andy Hinchcliffe’s droning tones stating the bleeding obvious it’s insufferable.
I don’t know about overall data for the Championship but the Besoccer website has the current injuries for each individual club which seems pretty accurate. They are generally wrong about when players are coming back for us - possibly because of our Club Omertà but the actual injuries seem right. We are certainly worse than many other Championship clubs which tend to have four or five out rather than our seven or eight. Although Millwall have had ten injuries at one point this season and Hull City eight. But maybe their players a) come back more quickly or b) are not as integral to the squad as say Burrell and Chair???
I’m not saying we’ve not spent a lot. I’m saying we’ve not particularly spent a lot compared to other clubs, which was the OP.
If everybody has the same money to invest then it’s pointless to say we’ve spent a lot so we should be better than the others. And we have spent £25 million whereas other clubs have invested £40 million. Why should we be better than them? Also you are not taking into account loans or transfers. Another thing is if you have a club like Wrexham that have invested a lot in established players like Windass, Moore, Rathbone, Shaef, O’Brien and Vyner and expensive loans from Prem clubs like Kabore you’re going to get a quicker return on your investment than getting in younger players.
Of course you can ask whatever questions you like. But it’s not a meaningful picture unless you compare apples with apples.
Only if you’re spending more than everyone else and you have an equivalent starting point.
But yes it’s fair to ask some questions. It’s just the questions you are choosing to ask. In my opinion better questions would be about our injury record, state of our pitch and preparation for matches. And yes it’s fair to look at individual transfers to consider VFM. There are certainly some players that have been disappointing. But not saying we should be better because we’ve spent x in one season without taking the other factors I’ve mentioned into account like past seasons’ spend, loans and free transfers, plus potential v current level/player age.
He did seem higher up the pitch on the left more often than usual I do remember one ball in that he played to Saito who over hit it to the by-line. Saito did that three or four times but I’m not if all of the balls threaded into him were from Madsen.
But yes that would have left a bit of a hole behind him. But I do remember at least one of the goals we gave away he was behind Saito when Saito gave the ball away because he pointedly ignored him when he walked past him for the re-start.
