Why Russell Martin is invaluable to Swansea City. Three transfers in ?
Friday, 21st Jan 2022 12:31 by Keith Haynes

We’ve all seen and heard Russell Martin facing up to the many issues he has had to deal with in the very brief time he has been at Swansea City. His personality and positivity along with his developmental mindset for his players has paid off again this week.

Cyrus Christie, the Fulham loanee who came in last weekend just in time for a debut at Huddersfield has already stated his admiration for the swans boss. We featured Christie last week, the details are here.

What Martin did that many other bosses don’t is he takes ownership of situations, and knows how to manage players and those situations appropriately. He again displayed this with Jamie Paterson. Let’s look at what Christie said last week “It’s always great when a manager rings you and outlines everything he wants from you and how he sees you fitting in. He spoke about his ideas and as a footballer it goes a long way when you feel wanted by a manager. This is a big club, playing brilliant football. I thought Swansea did really well at Fulham, it’s about those fine margins in the Championship and I hope I can bring some experience to the team, because it’s a young team that is going places and playing football the right way.”

There’s one very good situation explained by a new player coming in to the ranks at the swans. Another was featured yesterday by the official site when Hannes Wolf made it more than clear why he came to Swansea City. Martin again took time out to speak with Wolf via zoom and explained over a very long period what the swans are all about, how he sees Wolf fitting in and how the swans play. The news of an ‘exciting attacking midfielder’ first came to light on here.

That’s what a young bright manager does, and irrespective of where he ends up the swans and their followers should be happy that he is a hands on and intelligent manager who cares. This club is a breeding ground for good football, talent and progressively thinking leaders. And Martin is assembling a side that reflects that.

Transfers in ?
We were left in no doubt that the swans are still to bring in players before the deadline this month. We know they are needed and there is potential for another three to arrive. We think a permanent transfer may well still be on the horizon at the back, another midfielder and Russell Martin has made it known to the clubs recruiters he wants another striking option. That could well leave a pathway for more to leave aside from Yan Dhanda and Jay Fulton.
