Died aged 77 after a short illness; was diagnosed with bladder cancer in October.

Sad. Someone who certainly seemed to genuinely believe in public service rather than self promotion and power grabbing. He will be missed.

How sad, I had no idea he was ill. Always seemed like a decent sort to me and would certainly be a wise head at this difficult time for our country.

Shame there aren’t a few more like him. Came across as a genuinely decent man. Very sad.

One of the last politicians to have actually done serious stuff before he became an MP. RIP.

I never warmed to his politics but like Tony Benn, a politician I had genuine respect for.

Echo the above. Admirable public servant. RIP.

Not my politics, but, he was a statesman. He should probably have had the opportunity of public office.

His voice of reason against the absolute self harming madness of Britain today will be missed too.

Pity he wasn't still an MP during the LibDem/Conservative coalition - would have made a great foreign secretary. RIP

I suspect if he had still been leader there might not have been a LibDem/Conservative Coalition, he was always closer to Labour and also I think would have been a bit cannier about what the Tories were up to.

His big chance was if Labour had needed a coalition in '97 (you've got to remember that after '92 it seemed like the Tories were never gonna lose unless PR came in) and yeah he'd have made a decent Foreign Sec in the Blair govt. But the Tories ruined it by being utter dreck in '97; Labour got a landslide and suddenly decided First Past The Post wasn't so bad after all.
