Christ! We miss Luongo and Cameron. Cousins and Scowen today, and even Freeman when he moved more central we’re awful today. You could count on the fingers of one hand how many tackles they won today. We miss Luongo so much in there winning the ball in the middle third kick starting attacks.

Obviously everyone had poor games, but the core problem was Scowen and Cousins.

Cousins off made sense, but not for Matt Smith. We changed to a diamond, which actually suited them even more.

Dreadful from McClaren and the players today.

change at half time made no sense, we needed pace in the side, would have brought on Bright or Smyth but we were so easy to play against second half and never really played to Smiths strengths, he won every header and no bugger was anywhere near him

I'd play Manning with Scowen next week, Cousins was dire today

I kept a note of the performance for Jordon Cousins today. A terrible match to watch in hind sight.
No one has come out of it with high marks - in my opinion

Passes
One channel ball that Wells didn't reach. Not really a pass
5 successful passes including 4 forward.
One astray

Tackles

6 tackles - Won 5 - one lost

Headers
Won 4 Lost 1

First touch
4 good
2 lost the ball

By coincidence, I listened to an FA coaching webinar for Level 3 and 4 licence coaches on Monday
It covered the analysis of team and individual performance and touched on being careful of having pre conceived views of players
Unfortunately I have seen this all too often over the past 50+ years of following Rangers

Our results improved with 4 new players coming in - 3 are now out plus Luongo

Where, in those stats, is the completely laughable touch or pass or whatever the holy fcuk he was doing midway through the first half that ballooned out of play and into SA Road at about 1,000 feet?

Charlton are pushing for promotion..... surely, surely, surely they'll want him back???

If only they had an owner willing to spend this window.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Completely insane. He was so quiet today and probably should've been hooked earlier but you could say that for most of the team. One sure way to get him looking elsewhere. Tw@ts.

I thought Eze put in a decent effort, particularly moreso in the air than I'd seen in a while - sometimes he doesn't bother to jump just anticipates. At one point in the second half he gave out a bit of a rant to try to gee everybody up around him - clearly frustrated by it all and something I'd never seen before. He's definitely a bit off form but if he keeps going like that I'm more than happy to wait for him to play through it.

I thought the sub was justifiable. We couldn't play goalkicks/other dead balls short because we lack the defenders and holding midfielers to be composed under a press and we lost every long kick against Preston's tall defenders. We were reliant on ricochets and second balls to ever get possession - and Preston won basically every second ball all day. At least with Smith on the pitch we had a target.

Eze absolutely not to blame today. He was up against one of the outstanding Central midfielders in the division in Pearson (loathsome prick but still a quality player) and, as Hunter said, barely had the ball to feet once all game. One of the few times he did, he played a lovely weighted ball down the line to Freeman to cross for a half chance for Wells (?). Not to say he played well, he didn't and I do get frustrated by his ducking of 50/50s, but the game wasn't lost due to his performance.

Contrast the way Gallagher, Pearson and Browne played triangles all game, made excellent third man runs off Stockley, against the immobile rigidity of our midfield. Neither Scowen or Cousins are comfortable receiving the ball to feet from our defenders under pressure and it just causes so many breakdowns in possession.

I thought Smith won very very few headers, obviously apart from the goal I think only one header was controlled and directed anywhere near a teammate. Not wishing to be critical I've always felt he struggles to control his headers when his feet are off the ground. Lynch was pushed forward against Sheffield United and as highlights show he won a towering header against two United defenders and tried to plant the ball in front of his teammate. If our Plan B in last 10 is to go long ball, I think Lynch is a far better option.

Maybe his performance today was because he was thinking about elsewhere...

Fourth Round of the FA Cup?

This post is about Central Midfielders yet all I read about is Cousins. Yes he was poor, but Scowen got booked, was at fault for the goal, and in general was absolutely woeful. I would have taken him off instead of Cousins. This post has ended up defending Eze yet no one even sees how big a scapegoat Cousins is becoming. He was poor yet everyone else was just as bad, Scowen if not worse.

I don't know, just in a crap mood anyway

When he plays a square pass to his own player or carries the ball ten yards he has some people clapping like demented seals because it’s become a shock.

Scowen was poor at Sheff U too but I guess the difference is we’ve seen him do the business before.

Cousins may complement Manning more if we choose to bring him in as I hope we do.

Spot on, Cousins seems to be the new Lynch, one mistake and they get hammered wheras I can think of one player who has been all over the place in the last 3 games and another who has gone missing but because fans favourites they get a pass. Bit like why it took nearly 90 games for a large majority of our fans to realise Washington was playing well above his ability level.

Think scowen and cousins are both poor players. Give manning a run

Sometimes you just have to accept that the opposition did a good job. Preston pressed Scowen and Cousins well and had plenty of players in close proximity to swamp them and also put pressure on the defence, which made everybody in our defensive unit a little hesitant to pass and move in there and hence the ball often went long or safety first as a result. I think even Luongo and Cameron would have struggled a bit with that on this occasion.

But, Preston also had plenty of numbers at the back as well, so they swamped this area too and easily mopped up the loose balls. There was plenty of space in wide areas throughout, and Eze did drop to try and find the ball on many occasions, which isolated Wells, but because we always played straight balls forward we struggled to get a hold of it or put our foot on the ball.

In these situations, the team needs to pass square a little more, or diagonally and at an angle to shift players forwards in waves, but not always too far. This can surpress the opposition units and force them to retreat and that can then stop them imposing themselves on you in a way that you don't want. But, we barely did that, which was a shame. And because we were struggling to get to grips with what they were doing we lost our shape and that only made matters worse for trying to keep possession.

I did see McClaren telling Eze to try and stay in the Number 10 position and for Wells to stay close, but it just didn't happen because we were overloaded in key areas and inviting more pressure on ourselves from the amount of mistakes we made. It was a bad day for us, but Preston, as usual, did a very thorough and professional job in terms of their performance and tactics (although most of the goals were soft and defended badly in the end and they actually made a number of sloppy mistakes in the final third themselves, that they really ought to have done better with).

I did think the substitution at half-time pretty much threw the game away too.

It's not the lack of tackles we're missing, it's the complete inability to retain any possession. Scowen and Cousins together just don't have the skills imo.

Our whole midfield is weak,no ball winner,no playmaker,no one who can consistently break up play, they are all average at best.We are a mid table team and against better teams results like yesterday will happen.Good job we are not playing West Brom next week.

Because Cousins iS THE problem, when the rest of the team is having to compensate because one player is so off, it effects the positioning and play of the team, the decision to bring Smith on was to effectively bypass the midfield. After 30 minutes 1st half they pushed Pavel in field and furlong to an almost wing back to try and compensate and it sort of worked. Yes Scowen made mistakes but he was a) showing for the ball and b) trying to cover for cousins and then 2nd half practically playing central midfield on his own, as Freeman, Pavel and Eze seemed to have no clue how to play in diamond. As for Eze, Eze needs the central midfield behind him to be in control of the ball and to link with him in order to thrive, he is not equipped to deal with 30, 40 yard punts. He does however need to work much harder off the ball

Cousins can get away with running around filling holes away from home when we are not in possession but at home in this team you have to be able to pass and move and control the football.

Now the question has to be why does Mclaran trust Manning to give him a shot?
