Interesting interview with Shilts in today's Guardian - I must admit I didn't realise he actually made his debut for England back in 1970, and had quite such an astonishing appearance record for club (1,390 games) and country (125 caps). Also interesting to see him criticise the state of modern goalkeeping for its perceived deficits in developing technique. (Anyone see where I might be going with this?) His point about top sides being built from the back, with a strong keeper and centre half, ought to be shouted very loud in the ear of Mark Warburton too.

Wondering if a certain Joe L. could perhaps be sent a copy of 'Shilton's Secrets' (presumably, now they've been made public, they're no longer secrets) and locked up in a padded room at HQ until he's got it by heart. Though if one were to toss him a copy, I fear he'd quite likely drop it.
I also find it surprising he hasn't had more of a career in coaching, given his playing record. The guy might be 70, but so was Warnock, and the club could probably do worse than get him in on a retainer to try to do something - anything - for our hapless No. 1. Seem to remember a time when they couldn’t decide who was better, Clemence or Shilton and they almost took it in turns to go in goal.
Clemence ended up with 61 caps.
He’s right about mistakes though, one who makes the fewest generally regarded as the best. |  |

Yes strange that nobody else wanted to buy him, at £50k it wasn't a huge fee at the time as a few strikers were going for double that. I think Stoke may have been newly promoted.
However, England had a lot of very good keepers in the 70's, Stepney at Man U, Bonetti at the scum, Montgomery at Sunderland, Springett at Sheff W, Hodgkinson at Sheff U, Gordon West at Everton and several others who were highly rated. Maybe they didn't feel the fee was worth the upgrade. |
Yeah was very weird. His age counted against him a bit and his early career people worried about his height. I think Liverpool thought about it, but didn't go for him. |  |

I remember Shilton at LR , before kick off he used to score a big line in the pitch with his studs from the penalty spot towards the goal and smaller ones at the corner of the six yard box . We all used to shout "OI Oi" to get the Refs attention .
He looked like a goalkeeper , on his toes, springy and "catlike"..not just tall . |  | | |

My memories of Shilton are tarnished by only seeing him live on astroturf at Loftus Road. Also though there was the hand of God, he never gave Maradona credit for the second goal. |

I can remember Clemence doing that as well. Think a lot of keepers did it. You regularly used to hear about them being booked for it
