How to combat the high press 09:12 - Feb 27 with 4397 viewsnix

Just wondering if anyone with a better technical knowledge could offer some ideas as to how we might combat a team like Barnsley, who we're playing on Wednesday. According to Sky stats, Barnsley are the best in the league at winning the ball back in the final third and allowing the least amount of time for the players with the ball. While we have pretty good technical players, we do tend to like to take an extra touch or spend a bit of time deciding where to pass. Derby particularly hurried us into moving the ball.

How could we combat this without resorting to hoof ball?

So to recap page one. You've got to hold and give but do it at the right time. You can be slow or fast but you must get to the line. They'll always hit you and hurt you. Defend and attack. There's only one way to beat them ... the Barbet diag.

I think 'the press' is really beginning to do my head in. You just have two teams charging around at 100mph, no-one gets a second on the ball, and most teams seem to be continually losing possession. If players are technically good enough and quick enough to pass around the press, then it can be great to watch in a sort of basketball way, but most of us don't watch teams blessed with that level of ability.

We played Brighton the other week, they employ a high press, and I lost count of the amount of times we either passed to a Brighton player or played the ball out for a Brighton throw. It was like watching us in the 4th division, but worse. We couldn't find any sort of rhythm, so it's effective, but makes for a lot of intense, claustrophobic, scrappy games. I often used to watch games that started like that, but things would settle down after ten minutes; nowadays, your right-back gets the ball in the 90th minute, and before he gets a chance to look up, he's still got two demented forwards snapping away at him. Just watching it stresses me out - must be horrible to play against.

Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

Swap Adomah for Dykes lol.

Or, don't bother. Just put it down there and do the same thing to them down their end. Or at least, pick and choose the moments. What you certainly can't do is be giving the ball away in your own area, or keep possession indefinitely with mediocre players.

I actually am really pleased with how Warburton has, generally speaking, been setting us out to be much more pragmatic than he was initially. Now, he just needs to start picking the right team.

Ps Ref yesterday giving that free kick they equalised from...bollox decision, typical arsehole ref. I hate refs. They just love to give controversial sh!t decisions, you can tell they get a perverse kick out of it, the petty little sadists. All bullied at school, i'm sure.

Your criticism of the free kick (it WAS btw!) is rather undermined by stating that Barnsley scored an 'equaliser' last night!!!!!!

We all make mistakes eh?!
