Dropped-ball in first half 16:05 - Feb 27 with 1289 viewsCliveWilsonSaid

Can anyone explain to me what happened with the dropped ball in the first half?

Their winger (Bela?) goes down in the box holding his throat. Play continues but is eventually pulled up by the referee with Birmingham in possession in a non threatening position in midfield.

After treatment to the player it’s a dropped-ball fair enough.

Surely it’s either

1. A contested dropped-ball
2. A dropped-ball where we give it back to them in a non threatening position.

What happened was an uncontested dropped-ball to them where the referee effectively drops it for their player to cross it to an unmarked player on our left who heads it into a dangerous position. Thankfully we clear.

Effectively a free kick. Not sure i’ve seen that before.

Honestly I thought they were in somewhat of a threatening position at the time. Haven't seen it done like that before but didn't have a problem with it personally

Has to be a rule change we haven't been arsed to notice.

I didn't understand last week why the ref was making a point of telling the players who the drop ball should go to. So it's no longer a drop ball basically.

Next step would be what happens if we disagree with that and challenge it like it's supposed to be?

It was the way the ref actually teed it up for their player to cross it that bothered me most.

The ball travelled all the way back into their half after he went down. There was no question of foul play by us. I didn't see why they should gain an advantage from it. Uncontested dropped-ball with us kicking it into their half was the correct thing for me.

That's my point it's not a dropped-ball anymore. It's an indirect free-kick to them with no wall and the referee teeing it up for them!

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong. I thought at the time it dropped out to their player well inside our half with a bunch of their players still in the box

You've got me thinking now 🤔

I think we cleared it and it went back past half-way or thereabouts. Certainly 20-30 seconds of unmeaningful play.

There is now no such thing as a contested dropped ball.

That has definitely been the case all of this season & quite possibly the last one as well.

Along with that, if the ball is in the penalty area when the whistle is blown, the ball is returned to the goalkeeper even if the attacking side were in pocession.

Ok thanks for that terry.

Which begs the question what's the point in dropping the ball? Surely an indirect free kick or even a throw-in would make more sense?

yeh it's a new rule this year, referee drops it at the feet of the team in possession when it was stopped. Presumably to clear up all that grey area about who's kicking it back to who, and prevent the odd situation where somebody refuses to kick it back when they probably should.

Ok thanks Clive. So what's the point in dropping the ball now? Surely the ref can just place it.

Not sure why it bothered me so much but it created a strange situation yesterday where the referee was involved in an attacking move for them.

I guess he could place it, but it's always been a drop so it's a drop now, just not contested. Pinner will know better than me. It's the same if the ball hits the referee and affects play now, whereas that used to be tough sht play on.

I guess the drop part was to do with opposing players contesting the drop.

Without the contest why the drop?

Pinner?

(Cheers Clive)

Its a fair point, dropped ball distance is 5 yards, not 10 and you can't score direct from a dropped ball, so they are the differences (IDFK you can't score from obviously)

'Free kick' would also imply the defending side has done something 'wrong', which of course they haven't!
