I went to the brewery shop and was amazed that the sorely missed and boarded up Mawson Arms is up for rent as a pub. Why the new owners didn't keep it going is a mystery. I went into St Nicholas church next door. Apparently, Smith, of Fuller, Smith & Turner paid for the renovation in Victorian times. Fishermans Place at the back of the church and brewery was know then as Slut's Hole Imagine hailing a cab and saying “take me to Slut's Hole, mate”. Chiswick was known as Chesewic and consisted just of the bit by the church. What we think of as Chiswick, up by the High Road was just fields. | |
