England Squad 22:53 - May 11 with 2637 viewsdaveB

Ashley Cole left out of England squad and retired from international football, right decision but sad to see it come to an end for him, I know he's a prat but been a great player for England and one of the few to never let his country down on the pitch

I think it's fcking hilarious personally. Laughed so hard for so long I had to step outside for some air.

He's England's third best left-back so no great surprise. If he threw a hissy fit as a result it's a fitting end.

a right nobhead but always performed across his 107 caps so I won't lay into him. Much.

Right decision by Woy though

The bloke is a grade A cock, second only to that vvanker Terry in my personalist of most hated footballers, hated him since story emerged of him having to stop his car and be sick because Arsenal only offers him 70 grand a week.

oh i agree it's funny and really good for the England team that we are looking to the future, just think despite him being an arsehole he's one of the few England players who can hold their head quite high and his comments tonight showed a touch of class i didn't expect from him

Comments are from his PR team, Roy Hodgson has shown class by letting know early enough so he can retire before squad announced.

The bloke is a cocky prick, and I put him up there with Mourinho, Terry, Wilshere and szcenzy of blokes I'd like to give a slap. From an England point of view he's been our most consistent performer for the last 10yrs and is by far our best full back defensively.

Quite probably in a minority of 1, but personally think Shaw is the most overrated player in the country at the moment. Could of course go on to be one the greatest LB ever, but at the moment I just don't personally see it.

fair play to Woy in going for youth I would have dropped baines who I think is overrated for England, as I don't think cole has done to much wrong, (he must love the special needs one at the mo, dropping him for a RB)
but why oh why has he picked that fat mummys boy lumplard, he really does put the mockers on things, the bloke has hardly played and when he does he does feck all
Ward-Prowse,Morrison,Cork,Huddlestone, shelvey, any of those should have got the nod instead of good old Fat frank, hell why not even take another forward, Defoe, Carroll,Wickham, Berrihno, instead of that useless yes man tub of fecking lard

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I’ve always been impressed by Shaw. Quick, gets forward with ease and can deliver high quality balls into the box. Plus, he is only a kid so will develop further. A certain player at Real Madrid started off at Southampton playing full back and you can see why people have made comparisons between the 2. Still remember Bale running the show at left back for them when they played us and he was a 17/18 year old kid. Admittedly I can’t see a flying winger like Bale in his game, but can definitely see an attacking international full back in the making.

Regarding Cole, one the few players over the last 10 years that at one time or another can be considered the best in their position and would have been England’s only representative in a world 11. Never let his country down on the Football pitch, but has let himself down many a time off it. Shame, because he’s arguably the best left back we’ve ever produced. Personally I can look beyond his off the field slip ups because of the high quality of his performances on the pitch, but I can understand why others can’t. On balance, I think it was the right decision.

Jesus, you're a hard man to please!

As a footballer, Ashley Cole was brilliant, at times the best LB in the world and our most consistent performer. As a man, he's everything that is wrong with modern England and along with his other, mainly Chelscum mates, have contributed to the disconnect between fans and players outside of club football. Glad he's retired and can spend his time smashing skets of all genders.

Woy made exactly the right decision as we have better 1st team options and youth should always be back up options over older players. I think he will take Lampard too which I wouldnt but this Englad team are in danger of containing a lot of young/younger players I will be glad to support, even more so in 2-4 years.

This year

Barkley
Shaw
Lallana
Sterling
Oxlade Chamberlain
Henderson
Stones(?)

Euros

Ward Prowse
LTC
Wickham
Morrison
Fryers
Chambers
Redmond
Will Hughes
Zaha
Ince

Best left back England has ever had.

Off the pitch the biggest a/hole there is.

All about potential with Shaw, he reminds me of when I saw Cole playing for Palace against us on loan, he could go on to be a superstar but too early to tell. Right thing to take him to the world cup though

Seems to me that Shaw has been dragged along on a narrative of 'Bale used to play left back for Southampton you know...'

Shaw to me looks like another left winger in the making, very questionable defensively IMO.

Not to say of course that I feel sorry for Cashley, couldn't happen to a nicer fellow.

Great player for England, but he symbolises the worst of the modern premier league footballer. His ;pathetic response to Arsenal's wage offer, his gutless defence of his mate John Terry at the Ferdinand trial. Awful man, who when he was young looked like he might be someone admirable.
Good riddance. Getting easier and easier to support England at the moment.

Bare bones.

For me Cole was more tolerable than Terry, Lampard, Mourinho or their nauseous owner and fans. OK he was still an arsehole but he was also a proper world-class international player and we don't have many of those.

The only English player in the last decade you could make a genuine case for as the best in the world in his position IMO.

Shame he's such a gigantic minge really.

Taking aside his personal attributes, he has been left out for the right reasons (IMO)
Baines in No1 ...Cole has not played much this season. On MOTD last night they were all(players) saying he should be there for his experience etc...Well...since Cole has been in side...we have won nothing...He is not the future, so why not take an 18 year as a replacement.
Squad looks like its looking to future and lets face it....we have done nothing since 1966...so all this " lets keep the old players for experience" why? they have achieved nothing. My expectations for this years world cup are zero.

However, looking forward to seeing how youngsters like Barkley and co do...and hopefully if they are any good, will put us in a decent position in preparing for the Euros....If not...well...same old some old( or same young :) )

Also fair play to cole for his comments after not being selected
he could have had a real pop but went out with at least a little class

Still an A1 Kunt Though !!!

Excellent left back in my opinion. Has had a good career under Chelsea but it doesn't surprise me that ultimately Chelsea ruined brought his England career to a premature end.

true, we will gain far more from taking shaw than we will taking Cole.
The question should always be this in these scenarios:

If we don't take the odler player, could it stop us from winning the Cup?

The answer here is clearly no. Ashley Cole will not be the difference between us winning and not winning the world cup, or even us making the semi finals. It's a no-brainer.

Chances are we'll go out in the group stages anyway!

Bare bones.
