I'm sure some of you lefties want to continue your blinkered closed views on racism but you just can't get away from the fact Barnes speech was absolutely inspiring.

Having listened to it I agree that Barnes makes some valid points but i think he misses the point of punishing Terry. Perhaps we are all prejudice in many ways (including race in some circumstances) but as he said it's learnt behaviour and to eliminate that in future generations we need to be clear that it's unacceptable. That's why Terry being found guilty and getting a ban is a step in the right direction even if only a small step. |  | | |

I think hanging them out to dry is a bit extreme, perhaps the media have been harsh and unforgiving but their punishments from the FA are restricted to a small proportion of their yearly salary and not being allowed to play football for a little bit.
Again i would agree the problem is higher up the chain in the form of "covert racism" but that is a learnt prejudice from generations ago. The only way that i can see to remove prejudice is to show disapproval of it when it occurs for the younger generations to learn from. This will mean that "overt racism" such as the Terry, Suarez and even the tram lady will get jumped on but hopefully it will help to reduce racism across the board in the future.
Unfortunately I suspect that even if racism was completely eradicated there would be other forms of prejudice that would replace it. | | | |

I find your comment about the racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand as being one unintelligent man who 'happened' to abuse another unintelligent man just plain astonishing. How does Anton Ferdinand's (supposed by you) lack of intelligence lessen the crime? As a matter of interest - is racism worse or better if the victims are (supposedly) thick?

Once he was found not guilty in court the media seemed to say he was innocent to the extent where you wonder if they understood that he got given not guilty on the basis of a dodgy story that the judge said was far fetched.
Now he's being given a hard time again, which to be frank he deserves. This could have been over much quicker if he had said that he's not a racist but in the heat of the moment he said those words in an attempt to offend Anton and he deeply regrets it. It could have been over a lot quicker if he had gone to court at the first opportunity instead of dragging it out so he could play at the Euros. But Terry and his lawyers have dragged it out to this point so we've had two handshake build up weeks that were unnecessary, a court case and an FA investigation. The press would have a lot less to write about if he just held his hands up if guilty or cleared his name at the first opportunity if not guilty, but he chose to do it his way.
I thought Barnes's example of an Asian manager being brought in to Liverpool was quite a good example of how we'd all be slightly surprised by that as you do expect top managers to be generally white Europeans. But whilst I might think he's not got a chance I would judge him by the same standards as every other manager (results and style of play) and I'd welcome the opportunity for him to prove me (and probably many others) wrong. Ironic he should choose Liverpool as an example though because they didn't even give Roy a chance, so god knows how they would react to an unknown manager from an area not renowned for producing good football managers. But this probably stems back to Barnes's own issues where he feels he doesn't get jobs as a manager because of the colour of his skin rather than the terrible job that he does when he is appointed. If this fictitious Asian manager existed and he was as good as say Jose Mourinho, he would get a job. Chris Hughton does a good job so he hasn't struggled to get a job since leaving Newcastle. Racism is no worse than many other prejudicial attitudes but has been developed over the last 30 years as a weapon to control(a little like h@s).
The JT case is just a smoke screen of tokenism to hide the real issues from the masses whilst the real crimes are being committed en mass from the top of the pyramid.

Look you may have a point if this was the first time but we are talking the England captain here and this is the third time there have been accusations of this kind against him, he was accused of calling Ledley King an f'ing black monkey in 2006 and Samuel Eto who accused Terry of constantly aiming racist comments towards him. This was no one off, it was just the first time it had been clearly caught on camera i.e not just one persons word against another which is why so many wanted to go for him.
Its not about being left or right wing, its about the behaviour of a leading role model for our kids being totally and completely unacceptable |  | | |

Its not the JT case i'm particularly talking about but the whole ethos of how "racism" is deemed to be some sort of white working class creation when in fact it stems from and is still running from the top of the pyramid.

Anton showed his ignorance when he slated Ashley Cole for speaking on behalf of his friend. Racism and prejudice is everywhere and happens all over the world, it's not a white issue. If you are a white person and go to live in another country where the majority are of another race, you will encounter racism against you.
