As my account name would suggest, I live very close to the Olympic Park, and so take a strong side interest in all things Iron-related. If you thought our defending's been bad this year, there's has been beyond abysmal, and their recruitment shocking. You watch the rats scurry as fast as they can to leave the ship now its sunk on the basis that they're "too big" to be slumming it with the likes of us. That club has got the word "implosion" written all over it.. |

This - absolutely. Plus, as we have referred to on other threads, and will I have no doubt be coming back to on numerous occasions over the next few months, let's not forget the impact that having some genuine leadership in the team would make. That is my major fear with all of this data-driven modelling. How does it take account of the psychological aspects of belonging to a team, fighting for each other, covering for mistakes, anticipating mistakes before they happen? This is where this squad is highly likely to let itself down badly unless this gets urgently addressed this summer. And that inevitably means older heads who've been there and done that, in spite of what the CEO's obsessed with. |

Let's not underestimate the importance of all the leadership experience that has already left the building. Replacing that is not going to be easy, and that's assuming that our all-knowing CEO has even realised that this is a major issue. I fully expect next season to be made up of seeing a team of talented youngsters folding in the face of adversity on a weekly basis and not even understanding how to respond. As Clive pointed out, the second half of our season was relegation form. This is not a healthy portent of things to come. |

The Bermondsey Marxist Hunters have got Oxford at home, so its either them or the Tractor Boys for second spot, really. |

Of course the logical thing would have been to wear green hoops, where there is absolutely no chance of any kind of colour clash, but that would clearly have been far too sensible.. |

Is it just me who thinks this, or has the art of central midfield play disappeared out of foootball generally? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who "owns" the central area in the way that for example a Terry Venables or -going up a few levels -Pirlo used to do. Everyone just seems to be obsessed with getting it out to the wings as soon as possible for the wingers (all inverted, because of course) to shoot from the edge of the 18 yard box. Looks great when it comes off, but massively irritating when it often doesn't. |

I think its definitely time for us all To Cut A Long Story Short.. |

..With all the teams sashaying energetically on to the pitch to the sound of the Vengaboys' highly tuneful and indisputably culturally significant tribute to the local area? Sounds like a surefire winner to me.. |
 | Forum Reply | Was Saturday The Spark? at 13:07 23 Mar 2026
I think getting the equaliser at Leicester and then going on to win that game after that awful run before it was the actual spark, and what you saw against Portmsouth was the sign that something has finally sunk in with these players in terms of what they can produce with the right mindset. It may not have been perfect, but it was at least very front-footed which is what we've all been crying out for (including Stephan himself). |

Everyone's forgotten the late great genius himself, Mr. Terry Venables! |

It's really telling how keen Stephan has been to stress over the last few games that the main priority is to stay in the league rather than sound off about challenging for the play-offs. You really do get a sense that a showdown behind the scenes is brewing, and we all know how that usually ends. Best hope is that Nourry puts his hands up and says his obsession with buying players barely out of nappies has got out of hand and needs rebalancing with some seasoned old pros in the summer. As others have already said so eloquently in the course of this thread, he also needs to be telling us how he's going to hold the fitness department to account and he needs to be throwing his lot in with Stephan to make sure he doesn't walk in the summer. What do we reckon the chances are of all of this happening, versus Nourry doubling down and protecting his own position and ego at all costs? Answers on a postcard, please.. |

...And whoever it is, let's be honest, we all know we'll be having exactly the same conversation this time next year.. |
