The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day.

There were similar stupid posts on Hornets forums many years ago, long before this Mazey bloke appeared on the scene.
Most Dale fans who registered to argue our corner were very quickly banned. |
Seems like stupid posts are not confined to the rugby teams board.
Calling our own fans, or at least those among them who also support Hornets "fooking tvvats" let alone all other hornets fans, would never be sufficient to be banned on here and I wouldnt want it any other way. | | | |

In 1988 Hornets, Rochdale AFC and the council agreed a deal for Hornets to groundshare at Spotland after they sold their former home - the Athletics Ground - to Morrisons.
David Kilpatrick described it at the time as a marriage made in hell but an absolutely necessary one if the football club was to survive.
At first I think Hornets were generating some decent numbers, having a season in the top division and getting some really decent crowds.
Then things started to go wrong, and as Rochdale's board improved, so the club began to pick up more of the bills.
The working arrangement of shareholders was impossible and it seemed the council representative on the stadium co. board was overly sympathetic to Hornets.
Many Dale fans (wrongly, in my opinion) blamed rugby for ruining the pitch. I say wrongly because I think poor investment decisions on the pitch have been taken over the years, for whatever reason.
Eventually a deal was done for the football club to acquire 100% ownership of the stadium co in exchange for them paying a consideration to the council and taking on c. £600k of debt, which the current board has done an incredible job in ensuring it was paid off in full and several years early.
There was some bad feeling generated a couple of seasons ago when a home game against York was called off at very short notice, when the groundstaff cited health and safety issues with erecting the rugby posts. It was notable that Dale had a home game the following Tuesday, and had the posts been put up, as per normal after the Saturday's home game, the H&S issue would never have occurred. |

I would imagine Spotland Stadium is not as good or big a site as the Athletics Ground was to build a Supermarket on. | |

James, the move occurred more than three decades ago, when those making trouble for Dale and for themselves were barely out of nappies, although they've still not acquired continence in many respects
Meanwhile, those citizens of Rochdale who simply want to watch a game of rugby played by their town team are pretty much in a silent majority, and many are voting with their feet
The infrastructure around the Kingsway site is far superior for a retail outlet. Spotland was never under consideration |  |

He also told me that Hornets Board at the time were horrible towards the AFC Board, and tried to belittle them at every chance. leading to bad blood between the two clubs. Furthermore, the Council who owned the casting vote in the Stadium Company, nearly always sided with Hornets, which made it difficult for the football club.
Has others have said, the football ground area wasn't big enough for a supermarket, and thus wasn't considered.
It really doesn't reflect well on the town that the England/Fiji game can't be held here, and it surely doesn't help matters when senior posters like R17 wade in with late night (drunken?) posts which are quite frankly offensive and should be removed. | | | |

Reference the site of Spotland I realise on reflection that it isn't big enough for a supermarket and moving the football club to the athletic ground and a third site being found for the supermarket wouldn't have provided sufficient funds. As the owner of said imaginary site for the supermarket, would have received the cash for that. | |

There is some truth in that Golfduffy. R17ale has been around a long time and as he was an insider will be well aware of the shenanigans that went on. His views are driven by experience and I respect that.
Most of us would like to see both clubs do well and get on together. The jealousy of a small number of Hornets fans is sad. They can't turn the clock back and the mismanagement of their previous boards has been rumoured for decades. No merit in debating that now. But I do recall Chris DUnphy saying that the Board had considered buying Hornets as a club so that one Board managed both. That would have given Hornets more stability and financial prudence, but I suspect the dale haters would see prudence as a lack of investment in hornets. Anyway that didn't happen.
One thing that sticks in the throat for me is the 3 or 4 posters on the Hornets Board who show a lack or respect and understanding for what the Dale Board have done for Spotland. Alongsde the football fans, the Dale Board have bought shares and thus raised £800k-£900k in capital for the club. That has allowed the mortgage (some of which was Hornets previous debt) to be paid off.
They have also ensured that the stadium cannot be sold for speculative gain by an owner who gets bored and asset strips. That protects the stadium for the future and allows both clubs to use it. We know what has happened elsewhere when a "johnny big balls" turns up and promised investment and a bright future. We have fought off those.....Hornets haven't of course but then they have no real assets to lose. But long after their owner has moved on they will be allowed to play at Spotland until the lease agreement expires. These 3 or 4 hornets fans simply ignore that. | | | |

I was at a meeting the other week where momeyman Sebastian Gerrard was talking about his plans to buy the AJ Bell Stadium and install Swinton there as well as Salford so both rugby league clubs would be groundsharing.
His family were big Swinton backers 50 years ago.
If this happened then Heywood Road Sale would be available for Andy Mazey after Swinton left.
