As some may remember I was a huge advocate of Saito’s resigning. And I still obviously believe he is a highly skilled player at this level with a great engine.

But a few players have arrived at the club this season brimming with confidence - and now their form has just collapsed.

Kone is one.

But Saito is really worrying. Ipswich game was his third solid poor poor performance in a row. The guy is just a shadow of himself. Not only is he tripping over his feet suddenly and pretty anonymous off the ball as well - but for the first time ever (even when we were hopeless last year) his smile has gone. He’s grimacing and looks to struggling physically and mentally.

One of the things I liked about him is he seems to have indefatigable morale. That is now clearly not the case.

Dunne looks miserable too. Smyth is flouncing for the first time ever. Dembele looks permanently like someone has pissed down his leg.

I’m starting to feel it isn’t a very happy camp under Stephan. That’s my fear.

Saito had no pre-season and was thrown straight in due to our form. Maybe the energy levels have dropped. He'll get us off our seats again

I just think beyond Kone/Burrell/Frey(!) it feels like we have too many options amongst our wingers/attacking midfielders and Stephan is constantly trying to find the right combination.

Any footballer wants to be playing regularly so equally I think it's hard to find your groove coming in and out of the starting line up. Let alone the obsession with squad rotation particularly in the three game weeks (grrr).

Manager just needs to keep faith in what he thinks will work best and try and keep a starting XI intact for a few games.

I think the preference for inverted wingers doesn't help. I'm growing tired of wingers regularly cutting inside looking to shoot. No wonder Kone isn't scoring, he's not getting enough service. Given the options we have in wide positions I'd like to see Stephan mix it up with traditional wingers who stay wide to cross the ball.

Last season, Saito often seemed to get to the byline and then pull the ball back to the edge of the 6 yard box but we rarely had anyone in position to take advantage. I was hoping that this season, Saito would continue to do this and that Kone/Burrell would be there to get a shot in.

There was a variation of exactly this where Hayden made the run and Saito out him in for the pull back to Buzz, who had made the run to the near post expecting and anticipating exactly that.

Quite what Hayden was doing there is another matter but it clearly still works - getting to the byline like a dinosaur would.

This has been a problem though for quite some time. Even when we had Dykes and Austin up top, we ignored their strengths and continued to allow Illy & Willy to play tippy tappy passes on the left and then eventually cut in for a shot!

In true QPR fashion, we then hooked Dykes and/or Austin off, brought a midget on and slung crosses in for him!

Traditional crossing actually works. Who woulda thunk it? Next managers will be bringing back long throws.

this is just what he's like, he's a winger. it's what I remember most from him his last season and why I wasn't as enthused about his return as most.

Totally agree. If we actually allow the scales to fall from our eyes and observe his performances objectively, he's virtually mapping his goals and assists from last season, which hardly merits the £3 million outlay we have reportedly paid for a steady state player. Money that would have been better utilised in positions where pressing needs remain.

All the more astonishing when one realises that a certain home-grown player at the club has equalled Saito's goals and assists in just 35 championship games and achieved in a mere 1,164 minutes' game time. That includes just 10 league starts. To achieve the same, Saito required 50 league games (22 starts) total playing time: 2,938 minutes. I'd say the real talent is a certain 20 year old who is now persona non grata.

In light of the above, I totally understand his father's actions. The evidence is irrefutable. Add his goals and one assist from the cup games and he's comfortably outstripped Saito in just 38 games = a mere 1,352 minutes' playing time compared to Saito's 3.147 minutes, cup games included. But in football guru Williams we trust.

This is where I have some sympathy for the manager. All the players have fallen off a cliff. I do wonder if they don't really know what's being asked of them. Too many instructions? How can not one player stand out.

Totally agree with this - We are over complicating the game with mind numbing tactics.

He came on yesterday and twice got to towards the byline and cut the ball back, the first was over hit and the second picked out Kolli whose shot was saved. That's what he needs to be doing more of.

The diff between the two is Saiitodosnt go down like a sack of shit whe n a player is five feet away, he actually draws the foul Kolli did well again yesterday in his cameo but the ref soon sussed his hitting the deck when a hull, player was close to him , and don’t think gave one foul , thats the main diff , with the option we have Aval once again he’s best going to a club to play every week and ,learn the dark arts .

The thing that I find remarkable is that this "Saito Slide" thread has been running for nearly three weeks, and no one has posted a picture of a grinning Saito going down a kid's slide! (paging Danny Paddox)

Nice work !

But Danny would have scaled it better…..and you need Smyth in the background with some Haribo.

Not to mention the troublesome question of whether being so happy is related to him straddling two slides, one arse cheek either side of the divider...

Fantastic run and cross for Dunne.

Actually won a header across goal and Smyth should have scored.

And surprisingly strong for a little guy...

Fantastic run and cross for Dunne - agreed. Didn’t do much else imo and would have hooked him much earlier. The header he ‘won’ was when he was totally unmarked and just nodded it back in the general area of the penalty spot.
‘Smyth should have scored’ I mean I know he has two headed goals this season. But there were three Birmingham defenders around him and he’s 5’6’’. He tried his pushing the defender at the last minute and remarkably got his header on target despite the odds. Sadly straight at the keeper.

Don’t feel Saito contributes much overall. Might be better as an impact sub. Looking forward to seeing more of Poku. Get Chair back and can’t see Saito being a regular starter.

Signs of improvement and a peach of a cross for the first goal. Hopefully that gives him the confidence to regain his previous form.

Great cross after taking on the player, what wingers should do and he did it.

He also did a lot of tracking back against the Brum wingers and fullbacks. This is why Brum looked very poor indeed. Tactically needed tonight and did his job as Smyth did. Also why Demeble was dropped as we know he does not track back properly and that was needed tonight.

As Chair is out again, we shall need him.

That part of the game was really good - tracking back and supporting the FBs.

Add in the mobility and the threat of beating players and you have a much more balanced team.

Burrell lost half a yard as the game progressed but Smyth and Saito were still causing issues going forwards. Hoping Smyth’s problems were just cramp or something simple to fix. He had large ice bags on his calves once subbed.

How I wished that the Saito to Smith header assist had gone in - from a Dunne cross, would have been great.
