In light of OxfordR's niece's excellent film, thought it might be nice to have a thread with a list of Football Documentaries to watch in between abusing each other.

I also know a few posters on here have made their own so feel free to add:

It is absolutely excellent as you say.

Great nostalgia seeing the kids playing "Bobby Charlton's Casdon soccer". Used to love that game along with subbuteo &striker.

Yeah great stuff.

Really miss those old football grounds like the Victoria Ground (saw us play there I think in its last season, 96/97?). Proper.

Poll: How old is everyone on here?

Not a documentary as such but ‘Cup Fever’ (1965) was a lovely ‘cheats never prosper’ film about an underfunded, but plucky and determined, team called Barton United (an unfortunate name, but don’t let that put you off). Joyous daytime telly stuff from the Children’s Film Foundation.

Now who were the three England managers with alliterative names? And no googling (well you can google ‘alliterative’ if you like)! The clock’s ticking …

Bobby Robson
Kevin Keegan
Fabio Capello

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Well you got one, Kensal. (Actually, it could be argued that you got two: Robert/Bobby Robson, I hadn’t factored that in!)

Walter Winbottem is close.

Yes, Walter Winterbottom, England’s first official manager. He’s the one that eludes most people. So, one to go then …

Tommy Tuchel of course.

I guess. Will have to completely re-evaluate my pub quiz repertoire now though. Damn.

Incidentally, am I right in thinking that ‘Robby Bobson’ was the manager of Fulchester United’s arch-enemy in the Viz comic strip ‘Billy the Fish’? If not it should have been.

Replaying to message above - miracle of castel di sangro is the best sports book I’ve read. Not sure how it would work as a film though, what makes it good is the naivety of the American author - thought I’d hate it but really generates the emotion in the story. Deserves a documentary though.

I’ll kick off with Joe Mercer. Did he not give Stan his first cap?

Edit: which makes him one of the greatest managers England has ever had.

Points, with distinction, for Howard Wilkinson (x2) and Stuart Pearce. Deduction for ‘Ben’ Carsley (it’s Lee, of course).

Joe Mercer is a prize-winner. But I think Stan’s first England cap was in Alf Ramsey’s last match against Portugal (he says, as if he hasn’t just consulted Wikipedia) although the sentiments about ‘greatest manager England has ever had’ still, arguably, have a certain resonance in his case.

Still one more caretaker manager to go though …

I'm going to guess Peter Taylor and/or Sammy Lee. Those two were fixtures on that bench for what seemed like decades. I'd say they kipped in the dressing rooms in between matches.

Excellent! For one game only (a 1-0 defeat to Italy in November 2000).

The book 'The Miracle of Castel di Sangro' is absolutely amazing, and I'm always amazed there was no accompanying film documentary - or even a feature film.

The rights to this excellent book (which i have only read because Clive mentioned it on here) are NOT available. which means that someone, somewhere, is trying to make a version.
