Does he have a future here? Matos doesn't seem to fancy him, also noticed no Stewart in the squad yesterday

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

To restrict yourself to only one particular way of playing and do your best to dispense of capable individuals who offer you something else would seem to be a foolish approach, and it's one that has cost us in at least three home games now.

Over the course of the season I suspect you’d probably be right and I’d like to have someone with Waltas qualities on the bench. I suspect Matos would as well and that Walta would like a bit more. I wouldn’t blame him at all.

Saying it’s cost us in three home games may technically be true, but it’s a bit of a moot point given we’ve never started a season better.

I don’t see Matos giving up physicality and endeavour in midfield for a flair player, particularly when we play with two wingers and two attacking fullbacks.

I can see Eustáquio being first pick in midfield from now on if he stays fit.

That leaves one spot for Fulton which albeit is ok it doesn’t get us going all the time, but he has played well. Stamenić could have done better yesterday.

Then we have Franco, Just and Widell really.

We haven’t seen Tom Iorpenda yet. The real issue for me is Vipotnik who isn’t putting the effort in for me, and the ever injured Stewart.

A clear week to make it better.

He’ll mainly go with Eustaquio and Stamenic with one place up for grabs I reckon. There will be rotation of course, but those two will start the bulk of games when available.

Widdell looked very good out wide the other day.

The revelation by Vetch on another thread about Woodward and Haywood being on the bench yesterday because we were short of home grown players, has made me think about the complexities of managing a squad. Was a reason Walta loaned out because we couldn't have so many non home grown players in midfield.

It does give us food for thought would Heywood or Woodward have been given a game yesterday?
Don't think we can complain about the subs used but could question the long balls out wide late on if we can compete for highball in the middle coming in from the flanks why not quick straight ball down the middle given we had two centre forwards with possible players runners off them.

That defence splitting pass down the middle was sadly lacking yesterday. Without doubt, credit goes to WHU for shoring up any gaps but I can’t help thinking we made it easier for them by our slow laborious build-up play.

My dad had my ticket yesterday and that was basically the first thing he said about the game. Far, far too slow moving the ball.

I think we've got the pressing part right, but we can get stuck sometimes moving it through midfield. Opening up a defensive line that's had time and space to get set is much harder than with one still scrambling back.

Eustaquio if fit is an automatic choice for me in that six role. Don't think we've got anyone better for it. Franco is a little terrier, but again he's not going to carve out openings or set the pace. I've voiced my concerns about how long Stamenic takes to do stuff in the past and pairing him with Fulton runs the risk of reliving the Grimes/Fulton axis. Individually? Not a problem. Together? One for away games only maybe.

Just seen a quote from Matos on it. Ross Stewart left out because Scottish players don’t count. Idah did because he joined Norwich as a teenager.

Spot on
West Ham also marked our widemen tighter for za lot of the game, cutting of the passes
I wish we’d have more shots though instead of looking for the ‘through the eye of a needle’ pass or trying to walk it in

Eustaquio made a difference when he came on and West Ham realised it and tried to mark him out of the game. We put up a very good display against a very valuable and able squad. A bit frustrating that one of our efforts didn’t go in but all in all a good barometer of where we are.

I'm sure there's a reason for it in VM's head but to send this kid out on loan while persisting with Just is to me strange albeit with the benefit of hindsight - he's regularly scoring and providing assists both for Finland and LA... I'm sure he'll crop up again in the next round of Nations League fixtures.

23 goals in 59 games from a midfielder is not too shabby and Sirius are no pub team either, currently top of the Swedish League.

Not a criticism of VM but I would love to know what his thinking is on this, it can't be the homegrown player thing either.

I think we all thought Just was going to perform better than he has so far and maybe VM thought so as well ? Be interesting to see what happens in January

I think the mistake is judging Just as a #10. We don’t play with one, he’s just the most advanced of a midfield three.

When you’ve got a front three and fullbacks who get forward as much as ours do, one of the midfielders is spending a lot of time covering teammates being high up the pitch when we get turned over, the other two then have to play like conventional midfielders, not flair players. It’s the main reason I wouldn’t want Eom in there. That role isn’t just about unlocking defences.

As for Just, I get the criticism. He’s shown flashes, but hasn’t been anywhere near enough consistent. I also don’t think he’s aggressive enough when we have our 5/10 minute spells of intense pressing. As I’ve said a few times though, he’s looked a lot better than some of our best players did in their first few months. Everyone quite rightly wanted them to be given more time.

I’d still like a Walta type in the squad every game. Starting one would mean putting the breaks on Tymon and Lissah/Key IMO.

It's dangerous territory when people feel that they have to caveat questions with the phrase "it's not a criticism but"...

It absolutely is in this case. We're not creating enough opportunities and a player who appears to be capable of doing so has been bombed out on loan, only to be replaced by another who very much isn't based on what we've seen so far.

As well as Matos has done he should be challenged when he screws up, and this looks like a big one.

It looks a very deliberate policy to me. The two players on our books suited to the Dobbie role are Walta and Bobby Wales.

I haven’t seen a lot of either of them and Matos may just feel neither are good enough, but it looks to me like he isn’t interested in that type of player. He loves his workhorses.

Mistake? I think not having central creativity in the squad is yeah.

Walta is playing in a poor league as you can see by the mistake which led to the goal the doc posted.

It has little physicality and is far slower than the championship.

He is too small and isnt strong enough, even though to some people hes good enough because of one decent game and a great free kick in a dead rubber, he is there to get him gametime in a league that wont punish him physically, if he went to league 1 he would get butchered.

I trust matos in this one, hopefully he will have done enough by January to convince the manager that he can play a part because there is definitely a player there and we could do with his skillset coming on from the bench.

We have certainly been crying out for a creative spark in a number of games and from what I've seen of Walta he can provide that as well as being a dead ball specialist.

I don't buy the lightweight or height thing either as Just to me looks smaller than his 5 9 frame would suggest. Walta is 5 7 same as Routs, Leon and Dyer were 5 4 so I don't think anyone can say smaller players can't compete in this physical league.

Just can also play on the wing of course which may have influenced VMs decision but so far he hasn't looked comfortable in any position and I like many had high hopes after seeing him for Motherwell last season and in the WC.

Leon Britton was five foot and a fart and excelled in the right style of play. I don't think Just is that much bigger.

It's nothing to do with physical stature. This is the way that Matos wishes to play and he doesn't seem interested in playing any other. Hopefully that will work in the long run.

True, he went to Sheffield didn't fit the style and they were not going to change so he came back. Maybe it was a mistake having Walta on loan with a guaranteed purchase agreement in place, possibly a loan with a guaranteed option would have been better, hindsight I know. But let's be honest we are lacking a player like Walta but not Walta, an excellent performance for half a game has clouded opinions. The Championship is very physical and you get little time to control the ball, many players struggle to adjust Widell had to physically strengthen to fit in, Walta in most matches struggled like Just is now. Time to move on hopefully we have a decent sell on because he will probably suit another league better than the Championship.
