Recommend one book 22:35 - Jun 10 with 2091 viewsLala

I have the pleasure of Thursday Friday leave this week, with no commitments whatsoever 🤗

As rain in forecast I intend to visit Waterstones and purchase a lovely new paperback and barricade myself in for 2 days.

Any recommendations?

Tricky choosing a book for someone else`s taste, especially when you are allowed only one recommendation.

So I`ll choose one author - my favourite - and give you three books!

Decline and Fall: a small frothy satirical, funny easy read without carrying a big message.

Handful of dust: a dissection of the disintegration and fall out from a bored upper class marriage in the 1930`s and its far reaching consequences. A classic.

Brideshead Revisited: his sprawling magnum opus - love, loss, faith and religion and everything. Big lavish story with many memorable characters.

Edit to add: a pal rang whilst I was writing this and, in passing, I asked him his recommendation. He gave `A gentleman in Moscow` by Amor Towles.

His recommendations are usually excellent, mine less so....

Agree with Spud, tricky choosing a book for someone else, when you're not 100% sure on their tastes.

So I'll go with one of the first books I ever read.

My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell.

‘Where there is harmony, may we bring discord. Where there is truth, may we bring error. Where there is faith, may we bring doubt. And where there is hope, may we bring despair’

Coincidentally my pal is a fan of Gerald Durrell and recommended it to me only a week or two ago.

Probably a good call...

You can now get "The Corfu Trilogy" which is the 3 books that deal with his childhood on Corfu. (Think I only read "My Family & Other Animals" & "Birds, Beasts and Relatives").

Persuasion is a great book, although you’ve probably read it.

The Go Between by LP Hartley.
I read this book as part of my English course at school. I meant to read it again and I may do now I’ve thought about it!

Jane, I hope you enjoy it, as others have said it’s a bit dodgy recommending books to other people.
I haven’t been reading much myself recently, apart from Viz but people tell me it’s not a book.

Fred

Nothing wrong with Viz, a classic (not read it in years tho).

BringBackTheRedRoom a classic indeed! A magazine for the discerning reader. Roger Mellie, Mrs Brady, Big Vern, I’m surprised it’s not on the school curriculum

I would choose "The Last Days of Hitler" by Hugh Trevor-Roper.

A book that I have kept for 40 years due to the impression it left with me is" Down and out in Paris and London". In my opinion George Orwells best work.

I’ve actually written all the recommendations down, so thank you very much, very appreciated.

What I’m going to do is randomly pick a title out of a hat Thursday morning, and that’s the one I’m going to get 🤗 ( the things you do for fun when you don’t drink )

Anyway, then when I ‘ve read that I will chat it through with the recommender and anyone else who wants to join in. Then pick another one, and so on and so forth

Let ‘project read more ‘ begin.

And thank you

you might have to order mine from a library. I'm not sure it is on general sale these days, seminal work though it is.

I couldn’t wait till the morning so picked a title out of an improvised hat and...

A Gentleman in Moscow popped out.

Providing Waterstones have this in stock I will procure tomorrow, otherwise will order.

If anyone else feels like having a read of the same update this thread whenever and we can book club it!

Thanks guys 😘

I’m sure I’ve posted something similar before, but anyone remotely interested in history has got to read ‘Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee’ by Dee Brown. A story of greed, man’s inhumanity to man and the truth about expansion and the American West. Along the way some uplifting and inspirational stories.

Sounds good okeh, going in the hat.

Am excited to read material not normally on my radar. That’s how we learn and how we grow.
