West Brom boss Sam Allardyce drops early team selection hint ahead of FA Cup tie against Blackpool

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce has hinted he will look to make changes for his side’s FA Cup tie against Blackpool next weekend.

The former Blackpool boss, who managed the Seasiders between 1994 and 1996, makes his return to Bloomfield Road on Saturday for the third round clash.

The Baggies, who are struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table, are expected to change things up following their recent heavy defeats to Leeds United and Arsenal.

Allardyce, who has lost three of his opening four games since replacing Slaven Billic, is likely to prioritise West Brom’s league status and hand opportunities to the club’s fringe players.

The likes of Charlie Austin, Cedric Kipre, Kamil Grosicki and Filip Krovinovic are among the players who could get a chance to play at Bloomfield Road.

“We have to come to a conclusion on how we need to go forward - particularly after the FA Cup game against Blackpool because I will see my other players,” Allardyce said after West Brom’s 4-0 defeat to Arsenal.

“We have to achieve first and foremost a clean sheet, without that we will find it difficult to get out of this position. That is the first priority for us.

“At the end of January we’ll have a better picture and see what we have been capable of in the window to improve our squad. Everybody needs a boost.

"I’ve always managed with the players we’ve brought in to improve the team and it’s got us out of relegation problems. That’s the way for us to get out of trouble.”

'We were the better team' - Maxwell

Blackpool 2-2 West Brom (3-2 pens)

Blackpool keeper Chris Maxwell to BBC Sport: "I think we deserved it. We more than matched them.

“The type of game we play, we’re always hard to play against, we’ve said that all season, even against Premier League opposition. Nobody likes playing against us and we got the result in the end.

“We were comfortable, they are obviously a good team but we proved how good we are today and we limited their chances.

“I believe we were the better team throughout the whole game and we deserved the win.

“It’s all on the strikers to score [in the shootout] and as a goalkeeper it’s great to save penalties. It’s a good feeling."

Cock-a-hoop with that victory.

West Brom edged the first half but in the end we were bgy far the better team.

- He's nowhere near ready yet but Lubala should be brought on to be a central striker. He's got it all in his locker if he can develop his skills.

- Kaikai will have a very strong influence on the second half of the season. His fitness / body is looking much more robust.

- Credit to Critchley for his conversion of Ward into a central midfielder.

- Surpirised at how good Virtue was. He's slimmed down, is much more lean, and is quicker.

- Ekpiteta did his talking on the pitch when he came on. His performance said "putting me on the bench again for whatever reason will be a big mistake".

Sam Allardyce's nightmare start to his reign as West Brom manager continued as his former club Blackpool knocked the Baggies out of the FA Cup on penalties.

Twice the League One club led as Jerry Yates swept in Bez Lubala's cross from close range and Gary Madine stroked into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Semi Ajayi's header and Matheus Pereira's penalty, awarded for an Ollie Turton handball, forced extra time.

But Chris Maxwell saved three shootout spot-kicks to send Blackpool through.

Maxwell, making his return after a bout of coronavirus forced him to miss Blackpool's past two games, thwarted Kyle Edwards and Darnell Furlong before sealing the Seasiders' progress by foiling Pereira.

Sullay Kaikai had missed a chance to clinch victory against the Premier League strugglers by hitting the post with Blackpool's fifth spot-kick but Maxwell's third save avoided the need for sudden death.

The Seasiders, who handed Allardyce his full-time managerial break in 1994, added to his worries with a committed showing and never looked two divisions inferior to the visitors.

They were dangerous on the counter throughout, swift breaks leading to both their goals as Yates, the scorer of the first, turned provider for the second by helping Dan Kemp's pass on for Madine to beat exposed keeper David Button.

Kamil Grosicki set up each of Albion's replies, Ajayi heading home his floated cross before another centre from the Poland winger struck Turton's outstretched arm and Pereira made no mistake from the spot.

Each side had chances to win it in the additional 30 minutes but Button prevented Madine putting Blackpool ahead for a third time, and Maxwell saved well low down from Edwards' shot.

Albion remain without a win in five games since Allardyce took charge in December.

Blackpool manager Neil Critchley told BBC Sport: "I couldn't be happier with all the boys today, from the goalkeeper to the subs who came on - everyone contributed for us.

"We've not had a great record in penalty shootouts this season, so it's nice to win one."

On who he wants to face next, the former Liverpool Under-23s boss replied: "Liverpool."

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce told BBC Sport: "I saw how tough it would be. The most disappointing thing for me is the goals came from lapses in concentration.

"We came back from it. Was it a penalty? I'm not sure, I haven't seen it back but [Matheus Pereira's spot-kick] gave us a chance to win the game.

"But the quality of our penalties were not of the right quality to win us the game."

Thought Maxwell just edged MotM for me, but both Ward and Virtue had massive games as well.

Only downside are the injuries picked up, with a match on Tuesday

Blackpool keeper Chris Maxwell said saving three shootout spot-kicks in the Seasiders' FA Cup upset of West Bromwich Albion made up for a Christmas spent suffering from coronavirus.

The 30-year-old Welsh stopper thwarted Kyle Edwards and Darnell Furlong from the spot before his match-winning save from Matheus Pereira sent Blackpool through.

Maxwell, along with team-mate Matty Virtue, tested positive for Covid-19 on 23 December and the cup tie was his first game back after missing two League One fixtures over the festive period.

"It's good to be back, spending 10 days away from the boys and then spending an extra three days getting back into the swing of things, it's been difficult," he told BBC Sport.

"I wasn't very well with it. It's horrible what's going on at the moment but I'm glad to be back playing and contributing like I did today.

"It's all on the strikers to score in a shootout and as a goalkeeper it's great to save penalties. It's a good feeling.

"I think we deserved it. We more than matched them. They are obviously a good team but we proved how good we are today."
