A superb player & ranks alongside Bobby Moore as the best defender I've seen in my life.

I always preferred Ajax to Bayern, but Maier, Beckenbauer & Muller were outstanding.

RIP Franz

Beckenbauer running round with his arm in a sling in a World Cup semi-final is one of the craziest things I've ever seen in football. A brilliant ball-player, but a real warrior too. RIP der Kaiser.

Superb player. A libero ahead of his time. RIP Franz.

Really sad news. He was one of the most elegant football players I have ever seen.

Our old captain and my mentor, the late great Glenn Roeder was a huge fan of Beckenbauer and modelled his playing style on him. The Roeder shuffle was based on a Beckenbauer move.

I loved watching Beckenbauer play when I was a kid. Exuded class and awareness.

It was a shame that Radio5 chose to concentrate a bit on his Father Ted 'the money was resting in my account' moment after the 2006 World Cup but it shouldn't take the shine off his incredible career and life.

Never knowingly right.

Franz Beckenbauer RIP what a great defender, superb memories of his 1974 World Cup West Germany team against the majestic Dutch.

The name, in itself just evokes world class football. Theres only been a few names down the years that stand out, Cruyff, , Pirlo, Maradona , Van Basten, Gascoigne for example.

RIP Franz Beckenbauer.

Just checked one of only three people who won world cup as a player and a manager

Zagallo (Brazil) 1958 1962 Player 1970 Manager

Beckenbauer Germany 1974 Player 1990 Manager

Deschamps (France) 1998 Player 2018 Manager

Never was old enough to see him play but obviously seen the clips - a ball playing central defender along with Moore both decades ahead of their time !!!

World Cup Legend and our love hate relationship with Germany but this guy was respected and total class.

RIP

Franz Beckenbauer was never likely to leave Bobby Charlton unmarked for too long.

Loved him. Won everything in the game as a player, then manager and invented a role that changed the game. Bit of a one-off.

Thinking about him today, he played a bit more like a Dutchman than a German, the way he carried the ball from deep. Terrific to watch either way.

Saw him play with NY Cosmos in Melbourne. He and Carlos Alberto put on a clinic and at one stage moved the ball almost the entire length of the field by just lobbing it to each other. Incredible skill. RIP “Der Kaiser”

RIP

along with Bobby Moore almost redefined the role of centre back and elevated it to a new level. Strikers generally get all of the plaudits but when you consider what high esteem FB was held in you start to appreciate how good he was.

I always think 'what would he be worth today' about this type of player and the number would be astronomic.

If I was Deschamps I’d be a bit careful right now.

Most importantly, he was as cool as F**k.

It has all been said, here - almost. I would add that part of the 'style and 'elegance' was that he never seemed to need to rush about. It was almost as if, for him, running was an unnecessary part of football.

112 career goals . We can dream of those figures for our strike force!
