Holocaust Memorial Day is on 27 January (It marks the 75th anniversary liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau).

It's a real pity that in Jerusalem at the moment world leaders like Putin, Netanyahu, Duda, Orbán and others can't act like leaders and honour those that were murdered, rather than p****** on the dead and trying to re-write history for their own political gains.
They are directly responsible for why we still have stories like these.....
‘Where there is harmony, may we bring discord. Where there is truth, may we bring error. Where there is faith, may we bring doubt. And where there is hope, may we bring despair’
Watched and read some of the events from Yad Vashem, and Jerusalem over the last few days, found some of the point scoring embarrassing. Have had the privilege of meeting Holocaust survivors, dread to think what they would think of it all.
Putin trying to rehabilitate Stalin over the last few weeks just to justify his own power grab, to remain leader for life is breathtaking.
Netanyahu sucking up to Putin is totally surreal.
Winds me up BRR.

After engaging with politics fully over the last few years I now find myself turning off the tv and radio because the nonsense from politicians (and the public) just annoys me, and I try not to allow too much negativity into my life.
Whether it is the dangerous disingenuity of the Conservatives, deluded posturing from Labour, or misdirection from dubiously funded think tanks, I find myself unable to listen to them.
I found AVFTT similar; after a while the relentless negativity and peevishness of some, outweighed the interesting and informative of others and it lost its appeal.
Post-truth politics really is Orwellian dystopia writ large...
Bit deep for a Saturday morning spud, but I do sympathise with your view.
I also think your comments about AVFTT are well-made in the sense that it can be very ugly some of the time. Conversely, when people are in trouble or need moral support it can be just the opposite.
I can't resist the debate, personally. If you feel strongly about things I think you need to make yourself heard. It is one of the things that makes BST pre-eminent among its peers.
Yep, it was a little heavy for a Saturday morning, triggered entirely by Red`s final sentence.
And I agree AVFTT has many decent posters, but is dominated by the toxicity of the vocal minority; it ceased to be fun and just became annoying and wearisome because of the lack of nuance and manners. I haven't read it since I stopped posting.
Anyway on a more conventional ` what are you doing this Saturday` note, I`m meeting up with an old pal for a bit of lunch in Garstang then heading over to Longridge FC to watch them play Irlam Town this afternoon...
It's the games being played on the world stage, rather than our own local politics that's rattled my cage this week, and how it will effect us further down the line.
Refuse to go on AVFTT after that post about"non white" players, refuse to let them have any advertising revenue from my clicks (Not a click more NACM).
Fry up butties and Cricket for me this morning, followed by taking my PC apart and cleaning it (should improve my mood no end.......NOT!).

Totally agree with just about all of the thread, particular the OP. Reading a Jeremy Bowen interview yesterday as he spoke of anxiety and ptsd from reporting from war zones and he said, the world is a horrible place. It really is in some quarters and although we see a lot of good we are very lucky in that respect because some see only the awful stuff for the entirety of their lives.
I agree with Robbie about needing to vocalise what you feel strongly about, in an ideal world, but am also becoming more of a’pick your battles’ type person because the stress outage often outways any positive outcome a single voice can make.

There is a George Orwell play on radio 4 extra (or BBC Sounds) at the moment about his trip to fight in Spain (`Homage to Catalonia`). Listened to the first part yesterday, and it concludes today.
George Orwell (and especially 1984) has become alarmingly prescient over the last decade.
