| Former U's 13:45 - Feb 26 with 60749 views | RSCOSWORTH | We love our former U's, well most of them anyway, so thought I'd start a thread where we can keep up with them. Thought I'd kick things off with a happier moment for Matt Jay in Essex as he scored a long ranger against Chelmsford at the weekend. It wasn't a joyous return though as Torquay shipped two late goals to lose 3-2 after leading 2-0. https://youtube.com/shorts/xl2 Jay also got the equaliser away at Weston-super-Mare last night. Hopefully he's starting to enjoy his football again. [Post edited 26 Feb 2025 13:55]

So disappointed by this. Obviously a talented footballer and could've been an absolute baller for us but his career is littered with false starts. He's 25 and really should be kicking on not playing in the National League. What a waste.

The real shame is that we had to sell him in the first place, just to help pay for the ‘white elephant’ . Let’s hope Lisbie doesn’t go the same way.

Paywall for the first link - what'd he say? As for Ronnie, and I've just posted this on the injury thread, I recall hearing earlier this month (or at least sometime after Xmas) he was carrying a minor injury? No idea what, but I would assume it's no longer an issue. I guess it'll be down to who Danny and Nicky think is most ready for a defensive midfield slot?

“It’s really helpful of the EFL to give us a three-game week in the last week of the transfer window – we’re so thankful for that! “I don’t know who makes these decisions, not football people because it just blows my mind but it is what it is. He also said “We hope everyone gets caught up with their fixtures and forgets about our players because we’d like to keep the group together, if we could but we know that that’s going to be a challenge.” and “We have to thank Robbie to this point, because we’ve had some unbelievable offers for some of our players and as everyone knows, he’s a guy who is selling the club”. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

At least they pay tax in the UK to fund the NHS etc instead of slithering off to Monaco or Singapore to pay their greatly reduced dues like some of our ‘patriots’. The report the government commissioned several years ago clearly identifies that the gambling industry preys on certain sectors of our society, but what have they done about it, sweet FA. Now the constant adverts are whitewashed with ‘know your limit’ or gamble aware’ It’s like a drug dealer waving heroin under your nose 24/7 and saying, just have one.
| Former U's on 08:28 - Jan 30 with 1019 views | TAFKAT | How affective would it be saying 'When the fun stops' to a cokehead? Did banning fag adverts do anyone any harm (apart from tobacco firms)? People still sign up for cancer if they want to, but kids no longer see it as cool. Did banning car adverts glorifying speed actually hurt anyone? Have the restrictions on alcohol advertising actually stopped any of us having a tipple? So why the f### do we allow vulnerable people to be constantly bombarded by betting adverts? I'm not advocating that there shouldn't be betting, I don't mind a flutter occasionally, same as I like a drink and I used to smoke. Would it hurt football to only accept sponsorship from ethical firms? There were plenty of idiots that said F1 would never survive if they banned tobacco adverts, but it seems to be managing OK. https://www.nss-sports.com/en/ ...but the bigger question I hear you say, is what the chuff has this got to do with Former U's players? When asked if Szmodics still had a future at the club, McKenna curtly replied: "We'll see what the summer brings." Quizzed further on the decision to let the forward leave for a promotion rival on loan, he explained: "It's clear from a football perspective where Sammie's at and how he's done. He had a really positive first half of the season with us in the Premier League, scored some big goals and was on four goals by Christmas. He showed his strengths and we really missed him in the second half of the season. "He had two big injuries in the calendar year of 2025, both with complicated recoveries that have held him back a little bit. So there's obvious football things there. "But in the end it wasn't a football decision, it wasn't related to his football performance. It was a decision that was made in the best interests of our group dynamic, of our dressing room culture, of the values of our dressing room and of our team. "In those respects the decision was made that it was best that Sammie wouldn't be with us for the rest of the season. "Of course there was a possibility of that being on a permanent transfer but when there wasn't a suitable offer it was still considered that it was the best for him not to be here this season. That's all I'm going to say on it really. "It's difficult for supporters when you can't always give them the full picture. He's gone on loan to a team that's going well and I understand the perception of that. But in the end it's those of us in the top end of the club and my responsibility to do what I think is right for the football club. I've done that since I've been here and I'll continue to do that and that was the basis of this decision." | |

Oh, did a nasty Essex boy upset the little didums in the Farmers crèche! Last time proven winner Sammie played in the Championship he was the top goalscorer with 27 goals (33 in all competitions). This year, by comparison, two thirds of the way through the season, the Binners top scorer Clarke has a piss poor 12 goals. McSpanna could have saved himself, and us, a lot of time and just said “I’ve spaffed £9M down the shitter, because my man management skills are total shite”. Come on you Rams!!!!!! | Former U's on 18:31 - Feb 17 with 133 views | ghughes11 | Eddie Keen leaves Colchester United coaching role to join Premier League club! https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/ne Who?!? Keen, who had been at the U’s since November 2023, has linked up with the Hammers to assist in their Player Development Pathway phase. Keen had most recently been working as Colchester’s under-18 boss and guided them to the FA Youth Cup fourth-round stage, bowing out at Oxford United last month. Keen first worked as Colchester’s Lead Phase Coach for their under-15 and under-16 teams. He then moved up to coaching the U’s under-18s side but now has a fresh challenge to look forward to, at West Ham. Eddie Keen is the son of Kevin Keen, who managed the U’s in the 2015-16 season. The duo will link up at West Ham, where Hammers legend Kevin now runs the academy loans alongside the likes of Carlton Cole. Eddie previously coached within the Brentford academy and was first-team coach at National League side Maidenhead United alongside former West Ham favourite and ex-Braintree Town boss, Alan Devonshire. Keen has previously coached in the United States and worked in the American College system, having studied at Hastings College, in Nebraska. He also worked with Atletico de Kolkata (ATK), a professional soccer team in West Bengal, India.
