“Cambridge away in the very first round saw a last-minute winner from Whitton.”
Ah, the opening lines to the Special Duties song "Wembley Wembley! (Wembley here we come)" in 1997. Nearly 30 years later, I am certain that all Col U fans would bite their mother’s hand off for another 0-1 as The U’s travel about 375 miles less than they did on Saturday to lock horns with the other U’s from Cambridgeshire.
The less said about the Barrow match the better, so with that in mind let’s look forward to a match up against “local” rivals Cambridge.
Top of the ‘Last 10’ Form Table (Col U 11th) and 3rd in the ‘Last 6’ Form Table (Col U 12th), we head to the ‘Cledara (Sh)Abbey Stadium’ having just been ‘doubled’ by Barrow and so are looking to avoid a ‘double-double’ by avoiding defeat to Cambridge who beat us 1-2 back in August. Cambridge currently lie 2nd the League Two Table (Col U 12th). They are 4pts off top placed Bromley and 1pt clear of 3rd placed Swindon Town.
So, with all of that said we might as well throw in the towel now and hand over the 3 points to Cambridge and save ourselves for a mid-table battle with Barnet on the weekend! As the famous Kiwi saying goes “Yeah, nah!” Not if I know Col U! The Col U that I know goes away to “Man U beating” Grimsby and wins 1-2! Away to “High Flying” Swindon secure a valuable point in a hard-fought 0-0 draw! Deliver a phenomenal away performance at “Pre-Christmas” Walsall winning 0-2 and blow Notts County out of the water in a 1-3 demolition! Come at us Cambridge – what have you got??
As for the starting line-up for Col U for this match where we need to show that we have the kahunas for the fight, I would revert back to basics:
Weather: Sunny and a gently breeze during the day. High 7. Partly cloudy and light winds in the evening.
Score prediction…….
CUFC 1-1 CUFC (Payne)
Up The Real U's!
Ps. FANS WALK TO CAMBRIDGE FOR CHARITY
Three U's fans will be taking on the task of walking from the Community Stadium to Abbey Field Stadium, the home of Cambridge United on 16th February, aiming to arrive on 17th February.
The walk is in aid of mental health charity, Mind.
Mind works across England & Wales, giving support & advice, and are there for you, whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis.
Good luck to Adam Law, Jack Armstrong and Johnny Purslow. If you would like to contribute to their cause, please use the below link: https://www.justgiving.com/pag
Nice work, but Tovide doesn’t deserve a start after Saturday.
Goodwin has shown a few glimpses of improvement but needs wide men that will give him service, rather than a teletubby that is always falling over and feinting injury. Tovide is no winger! Frankly, I’m not convinced Goodwin is a solution in the absence of MBick.
Our most influential player, Payne, has also been playing deeper to accommodate Akachukwa or Barbrook and (IMHO) Payne has therefore become less effective. I wonder, could Payne lead the line and become a Cureton like fox in the box? Drop Tovide and Goodwin to accommodate the two loanees that have impressed? A change of formation might then be desirable (or select a proper winger). The absence of Iandolo and MBick is a real headache.
I reckon Back is a better defender than Hunt, who is better in midfield. The conundrum there is neither are natural left backs. Might KVY go left and Back then right?
Along with many other ST holders, I don’t have a ticket and fear that tonight could be when the Johnny come latelys turn on Cowley. There was evidence of that at Barrow where the levels of player (and Cowley) abuse from some fans was over the top. With so many U’s fans in home areas, what could possibly go wrong? Cambridge ticketing is likely to create major issues, unless we win…..

I would say “Neil Harris”. He’s a very good manager for L2 and DC/NC will need to up their game tonight, their Plan A, B and C need to be better. It’s not enough just to fire up the players.

Three changes from Saturday’s game at Barrow as Rob Hunt, Teddy Bishop and Owura Edwards return to the starting line-up. Fin Back, Romeo Akachukwu and Will Goodwin move to the bench.
So, Tovide up front with Lisbie back to RW and Edwards LW.
No debate, Cambridge are as dangerous as we expected, but what a massive difference in the energy and passion from the U's - thoroughly deserved the equaliser. More of the same second half please.
Not the win that we could have had, but an excellent performance nevertheless, and a well-deserved point at the Shabby. Needed that after the last few games!
Just watched the full match replay on I-Follow. What struck me most was how many empty seats were in the (new) Home End Family Stand that we usually sell out. Instead we get allocated only 1045 tickets and U’s ST holders like me miss out. Cambridge got this badly wrong.
How we played so badly at Barrow, then deliver this excellent performance escapes me. We were also excellent at Crewe, but lost. The issue is patently that we need a reliable goal scorer and yet again Tovide failed to put away his chances. I bet Luton are grateful he failed the medical, but then he probably fell over and rolled about in the medical centre. We are really missing MBick.
I’ve not given up hope of still having something to play for in April, but it’s a relief to not be scrapping with Newport, Harrogate and Barrow on the brink of relegation. I hope Newport is the survivor as it is a decent away day, unlike the other two inadequate venues.

Very decent point, looked the tidier side, but notice they always get shots off around the box more regularly when in the top half. Sub loanees did not look out of place . Would we be happier if we got a draw last Saturday and lost Tuesday ? Need to follow this performance into Saturday now.
Cowley had a right grizzle over moving MDK game to Weds and then the Saturday fix becoming an early kick off .
Whilst we weren't great at Barrow and they managed to steal the three points just in the last month and a half:
Bromley didn't beat Cheltenham at home. Swindon lost to Shrewsbury. Cambridge lost to Harrogate MK failed to beat Crawley at home Notts County lost to Shrewsbury Chesterfield lost to Newport Salford lost to Newport Crewe drew with Harrogate at home Walsall lost to Bristol Rovers Grimsby couldn't beat Newport away Barnet drew away at Shrewsbury
It's such a tight division this season and anyone can take points off anyone. We've just got to keep going, see how many points we can get and see where that takes us. Maybe with key players coming back from injury they'll be a bit fresher than most during the run-in.
