The old Ford site. Vantage US investment. God news what they do but it is a massive site. Chip factory perhaps. They have a big footprint in South Wales.

They bought up a Chinese firm in Newport last week after security concerns.

Well done the WAG.

You mean the Senedd.

Putting that aside, how much has the Senedd promised them in grants or other "persuaders"?

Then there's the "chip" thing, no, it's a data centre. They will have very large computers providing internet servers for whoever wants to ay them for their use. There won't be a very large workforce, I don't think. In 2023 they achieved record growyh and increased their worldwide workforce by 60%, to just ober 1000.

This thing isn't going to bring wealth to Wales, it'll take money out. They'll pay their taxes, well only as much as their top flight accountant can't avoid. And they'll pay 40-50 workers but only a few of those will be well paid jobs. All the profits will be siphoned off to wherever headquarters is, probably a low corporation tax country like the ROI.

Then we'll probably find out the Senedd has given them a multi million start up grant so Wales just loses out.

Time will tell eh.

What timing is that ,news today that the Development Bank of Wales is hemmoraging money at a rate of knots ,you know the one ,owned ,operated and paid for by the taxpayer by the Senedd,so much so a formal letter request has been submitted asking the FM why its losing ,money , a list of who's reneged and a list of loanees .
It appears yet again what ever public body is run by them ends up wasting and costing us millions.

Being positive on this forum about Wales is never a popular thing on Swansea Independent. It is good news as there are a lot of these jobs being created. Digital jobs. They themselves can create spin offs . I do not claim to be an expert.

Wales is slowly transitioning from heavy industry. Unhealthy filthy cancer giving jobs Wales values so much.

There won't be a lot of jobs, it's a data centre. Being positive is fine but when reality says something different then it's not ok to live in a fantasy land. Here you go,

https://vantage-dc.com/news/vantage-data-centers-achieves-record-growth-in-2022/

just over 1000 employees worldwide after record expansion. Like I said, there'll be 40-50 jobs, mostly not even digital, probably security jobs.

Wales values good jobs that give people a future, I'm not sure this company provides that apart from a handful of well paid jobs that will probably go to non Welsh people.

Regarding your last paragrapgh, the delay of Aston Martins start up in St Athan was to allow a large proportion of their existing work force to transition over, not really the successful story they would like you to believe.

It is good news. All new jobs are good news. I do not have a clue what is required but the set up establishment jobs will be useful and haulage and technical work. I like to think the Welsh workforce is up to more than security just in the maintenance. There will be a requirement for (green) power and rates to be paid. It is all valuable.

The people of Bridgend wrote their own death sentence on big manufacturing with poor trade union practices and voting for Brexit. I recall them striking at Ford about a decade ago over restrictions in over time. That did not turn out well.

'Non Welsh' people??? . It was you lecturing me on the Trust giving money to £nglish £awyers. They will buy nice n big houses in Cowbridge.

You should ask the people of Merthyr and the dust from the last open cast coal mine which was not managed well.Contributions form profits were not creamed off for reinstatement. It should all be back to nature in about 30 year with taxpayers picking up most of the tab.

Port Talbot people with their children will soon be able to breath clean again hopefully and the place's reputation improved. I told someone 10 years ago the clock was ticking on the plant.

Old work go new jobs come and it is for the best. If they found a new coal mine in Wales there would be no workforce to go underground. Bridgend Ford closed relatively recently and Ineos, who were going to replace it, went to France after Brexit which Bridend people voted for.

It is the "happy clappers". The poet told us Swansea people were not known for being optimists. Good news is bad news and bad news is terrible.

"We have investment"
"we have US people in Swansea" .
"What else can we complain about?"

"We need to known details on the LLC." Brilliant Reg what did the Roman ever do for us?

No you do not you are not capable of using this information. You have your own useless body. They are not a growing business force.

All these people are skilled and well paid and living in Wales most probably in the Vale of Glamorgan. Good for the economy. it is up to the locals to inherit these jobs when they retire. That is about education and apprenticeships.

They pay income tax and rates etc. and her indoors wants a new kitchen and windows.

It may not be thousands of jobs, but at least it’s a start and a step in the right direction. Let’s hope it’s the first of many. The WG get criticised when they don’t deliver jobs and they get criticised when they do.

The loss of our industries is having a massive effect on our communities, but it’s not just in Wales that’s it’s happening, it’s being replicated throughout the more developed industrial nations. In the States industries have moved to Mexico, in Europe they’ve relocated from the U.K. and Germany to the former iron curtain countries, over and above China has opened up and thousands of Western companies have flocked there.

The despot countries are looking to run everything, its in the Bible about the Yellow race taking over the World, its already started and growing, we going to rely on steel from China etc, if there is ever another War we going to be making weapons and armour with Chinese steel, which is highly likely going to be vastly inferior steel, its lunacy to rely on these Eastern Countries for all our manufacturing.

Ford stopped all vehicle production in the Uk in 2013. Long before any Brexit vote. They transfered production to low cost European countries. They abandoned production at Jesey Marine in 2000. Still some people blame Ford leaving the UK on Brexit which of course did not happen until 2020.

AI is going to have an incredible impact on jobs and industry. Any government funding to entice industry to an area needs to be careful thought through because long term they may not be employing the numbers. The speed AI is changing the employment market is staggering. We now have students starting a specific university course 3 years ago as a pathway to employment and the jobs no longer exist.

It’s not just steel, the manufacturing of lots of different products is now concentrated in China. Our businesses are developing products and they are all being built in China, our reliance on the far east is enormous.

No , that's not having the ability to create, manufacture your own products , due to all party's reluctance to invest in manufacturing ,apprenticeships and investment in your own country.

No, that's what happens when you have a free market economy.Companies go to where they can get their products made for as little as possible and sell for as much as possible.

If you want centralized planning then you get communism or similar

You seem to fail to grasp that if your competitors do not have a manufacturing base to be able to compete then that's not capitalism that's a monopoly

The Ford factory closed in 2020 not 2013. This was four years after the people of Bridgend followed the recommendation of their controversial MP and voted to make Ford s life a lot harder and uncertain with Brexit.

The Senedd lined up Ineos to make a new 4x4 vehicle nearby picking up presumably the freed up workforce . Sir Jim Radcliffe a Brexiteer then changed his mind and took his factory to France. The people made a bad mistake costing them thousands. The Senedd has got some jobs back. US investment as promised but not enough.

The voter got what he voted for. This is It. Loss of euro focussed motor jobs replaced with US tech jobs.

& Zimmer Biomet?

600 well paid jobs in a nice clean environment.

R&D jobs / many skilled people.

As for coal & steel the stuff we will now import to keep the country going.

Unfortunately clean air doesn’t pay the bills until we have a good infrastructure into South Wales there will next to no jobs created.

Well paid jobs are good news, more low paid jobs that see people still claiming benefits are not.
The power will benefit who? The company that supply it and many of those companies are not owned by anyone British.
Th "non Welsh" comment is merely pointing out to you that it would not be a great benefit to Wales, given your stance on lawyers I thought maybe you wouldn't like the idea but it doesn't bother me one bit.
Those rates, yes they will pay them but I still want to know if the Senedd has provided any sweeteners?
It doesn't matter what the workforce is up to, it's who the bosses decide to employ that will matter.

The big picture could easily be that this company takes far more money out of Wales than it puts in. lets hope that doesn't happen. American companies though, are very good at that kind of thing, avoiding taxes in this country has been a bugbear for very many people for a long time.

Contrary to myth, capitalism does like competition, it often leads to monopoly and cartels, but it's all done under the banner of free enterprise
