Millwall v Swansea City : Match Day Thread
at 13:06 5 Jan 2026

Extremely frustrating but no complaints about the result yesterday, Milwall deserved to take the points, my key takes from the game were:
- We always struggle against big physical teams, our players and style are not a good fit to deal with a constant flurry of balls in the box or over the top.
- Allowed far too many crosses into the box (33 in total I think), the coaches will have known this was coming but we just could not cope with it yesterday on either side.
- That was the best display of shot stopping I have seen for a very long time from Vig, simply oustanding glovework.
- Seemed more like an American football game with their centre halves spending more time in our box than their own with set play after set play being launched at us.
- Milwall generally looked a yard sharper than us all over the park.
- Not that impressed so far with what I have seen from Samuels, doesn't seem too dynamic IMO however a tough game to be parachuted into.
- Vipotnik was invisible yesterday, needed to be physical but made no mark on their centre halves all game?
- Route one football is definitely making a comeback so our coaching team needs to evolve things again to deal with this old/new way of playing.
- Ronald needs to practice his diving more, some lame dives again yesterday when he would have been better staying on his feet whe past his marker.

In spite of the loss I am still positive for what the rest of the season holds, at least we now have a manager who can see the value in setting up teams / tactics to suit each fixture rather than a copy and past routine for each game which is something we have been missing for a while.....

Credit where it is due Matos is making a very positive impression. I always wait for at least 6 games in before I start to form an opinion as you can't change systems overnight, the fact hes evolved this using the players he has in a short space of time during a hectic period (without his back up staff) is quite impressive.

For me the major positives so far would be:
- Galbraith at right wing back has given us a new attacking threat down the right hand side, it's refreshing to see the ball going forward more often than not (albeit to Ronald)
- Burgess & Cabango are looking more compact and solid, winning a lot more of their challenges lately to give us a strong base.
- Stamenic is now looking to go forward more and is more positive with the ball.
- Widell has bags of energy and with more games under his belt will no doubt be a great addition.
- Vipotnik seems to be holding the ball up much better and bringing players into the game which is great to see and makes such a difference.

Still lots of issues to fix with Idah, Cullen's role, Ronald's attacking threat, Franco looking knackered but the signs are positive. Hopefully with the solid platform he has developed he can now utilise the loan players more so he has options to rotate tired or out of form players.

Based on yesterday's game alone I can see that Yalcouye could make a real difference to the rest of our season if he can get a run of games, would be a shame not to utilise him whilst we have him.

Credit where it's due Matos has made a positive difference so far (with the help of Leon and Joe which is also encouraging).

So , what about Santos
at 12:37 16 Dec 2025

Point well made regarding Key, he is bang out of form and not suited to the current style or formation unfortunately. I don't see him as the sulking type and hopefully he can for his own careers sake find a better level of performance soon or he will be on his way elsewhere.

Football is a brutal industry despite the rewards on offer. Not defending the mistakes Key has made recently but I personally dont put this down to a lack of effort, sometimes things move on and leave you behind....

Being a politician seems to be the only job that currently provides security and reward for consistent failure and a lack of talent.

I wouldn't worry about damaging his confidence, a good manager keeps all his players on their toes to create solid competition for places. As things stand we have too many sub standard performers who retain their places week after week despite their poor performances??

If they have the right character they will respond positively, if they are a snowflake then they will move on - both positive outcomes for SCFC in my mind.

No one with the exception of Galbraith can really claim they are untouchable in this squad. So far only Key has got the axe, there are a few fortunate players who really need a shake or a rest to get the team firing again.

There is no compelling evidence after 21 league games to suggest carrying on with the current set of players will result in better results. If we don't give the loan players a chance soon then they will return to their clubs in January, I hope we have alternatives lined up should this likely scenario happen.

Based on what I have witnessed these past 3 games and the fact we are at home and need to take the initiative to Wrexham, I would make the following tweaks to give us more attacking threat.

Inuossa for Ronald (we need more than just 'a good work rate' from our winger, especially at home).
Wedell for Franco (this guy looks dead on his feet IMO and needs a rest)

Matos needs to find a way to get Yalcoure some more minutes too as I am sure with a good run he would add a lot of value to the team.

On the fence still with the Cabango / Burgess partnership, Casey and WHU must feel pee'd off he hasn't been given a proper run yet. Galbraith has shown us in the last few games how much difference an intelligent player with a good engine can make at right back, we need to find a good quality RB in January so we can free him to get forward more.

That was a tough one to take and we deserved more from the game 100%.

Progress is being made based on what I watched today despite the lapses. First half in particular we moved the ball forward quicker than we have for a long time and created chances. We did create a lot of chances to day which gives me hope things are going to get better from here on in. We looked lost at sea a few weeks back but are now looking competitive with more options, still a long way to go but progress for sure.

Pissed off with the loss but seen enough today to feel hopeful going forward.

Stoke is still a doghole with the most entitled fans for some reason? The ref caved in to constant pressure from the crowd today and did not look up to the task required for championship football yet IMO, he let Stoke get away with a lot today which was very frustrating.

Based in Sutton Coldfield and tend to go to more away games than home ones with my lad. Costs me too much on speeding tickets coming back to Swansea (220 mile round trip), the new bypass through the valleys has a camera every 20ft.

Will be at Stoke tomorrow in the pissing down rain for one of our 'local' games.

2 wins on the bounce without too much of a change of our current system, you cant do much more than that...onwards and upwards and will still take time to evolve the game plan. If we can pick up more points during this transitional period I will be delighted.

A few niggles remain however with a few players that I just cant see adding much value to things going forward even with a new system and tactical plan.

Ronald - Yes he works hard but in reality offers us absolutely nothing going forward at this level, cant beat a man, cant cross, no attacking threat and always on his arse looking for fouls. If we are going to improve as a side we need to find a better solution as that right side is now looking like our biggest weakness. League 1 standard at best, premier league not a chance.

Idah - Daylight robbery for £6m, Celtic must be delighted with the deal.

Franco - Undoubtabely a good player but looks absolutely shattered and has offered very little of late, looks like he would benefit from a rest IMO.

Positives - Stamanic, Wedells inclusion and the new defensive shape with Galbraith on the right side.....suddenly we have a good defensive base to build from which is credit to Matos for making the change so quickly.

"hate them" - how old are you man, grow up!

They might well be out of form or just not equipped to play in this dire current system, all good professionals however who are putting effort in. Hardly a reason to be hated?

Our Defence

Our style is most definitely not suited to the championship, a blind man could see that.

It does get my goat when people keep talking about getting back to the 'Swansea way'....why would you go back to base your game around a system that was effective 10 years ago. Football has moved on and so should we, lets focus on building a team that can compete using the old fashioned virtues of hard work, organisation and discipline.

To succeed in the championship you have to have a core bunch of mentally strong players who are willing to go the extra yard, unfortunately we dont seem to have any of these within our current squad. More interested in their 'stats' than actually trying to graft to win a game.

For a short while today there seemed to be a glimmer of hope until the usual feeble defending kicked in. This won't change overnight and I hope that Matos can quickly identify the best system for this mob along with the players who are actually up for the fight.

Franco feigning an injury instead of getting up and blocking his man getting forward (WBA actually scored from the move) just sums up some of the attitudes within this squad.

Regardless of how good a coach Matos is you can't polish a turd - Idah & Ronald really need to find some desire from somewhere if they are going to add any value to this team going forward.

There are a few other excellent desi pubs nearby too for those who like an indian grill and a few pints of Cobra pre match.

Soho Taverns - B70 8PR (the best desi pub chain in the Midlands IMO).
Red Lion - B71 1RH another cracking desi pub

There is a harvester just off M6,J7 also for a quieter pint - B43 7AG (15 mins from ground but easy access via Halfords Lane).

All opinions welcome mate. I guess my thoughts behind giving Vig a rest are down to giving him a shake as his reluctance to leave his line does put more pressure on the defence and in my opinion is contributing to our nervousness at the back. He has his own faults as do the defence in front of him clearly, both combined at the moment makes for nervous viewing.

A paramedic would struggle to find a pulse in this team at the moment so changes are desperately needed even if that means taking a step back to allow us to move forward.

Appalling is a bit strong dont you think?

Anyone that has played over 100 professional matches is hardly appalling. He is good enough to tep in and give Vig a breather for a few games which will do him no harm whatsoever and in my opinion will not weaken us too much based on what I have seen recently.

Vig is not playing well enough to be untouchable so why wouldnt you give him a chance whilst assessing your squad, hes played well enough this season to get his chance.

With regards to his performances during Martin's reign I think most keepers would have been traumatised playing that type of nonsense out from the back.

He isn't the long term answer 100% but it would do hirm no harm to sit out a couple of games to gee him up a bit and get the juices flowing again. Not suggesting for one minute Fisher is the better keeper but Vig defo needs a shake, nothing wrong with keeping players on their toes and competition for places open rather than the stale situation we currently have.

No one is too good to be dropped or switched atm with the exception of probably Galbraith.

We wont get relegated this season with the squad we have, with some proper guidance and direction we can climb back into the top half, not good enough to get near the play offs IMO despite this being a bang average league this season.

Plenty of games left fortunately to fix this system and get the players switched back on. The vast majority of goals we concede have been individual errors which can be fixed with good coaching.

We have conceded far too many goals from poor marking at the far post recently - Eom on Tuesday, Samuels Smith on Saturday. Add to that Cabango and Burgess chipping in with a few clangers and that has been the difference between picking up points and losing (probably lots more I could mention here too).

Matos could do worse than shake it up a bit for a couple of games and bench the poor performers:
Out with Vig, Ronald, Cabango, Eom, Key, Cullen
In with Fisher, Casey, Inoussa and Widdell, Yalcouye

We are undoubtably at our lowest point currently so the only way is up, underperforming players need to get their hunger back and fight for the badge which is why I would drop them now and change the dynamic of the team with a bit more hunger and energy.

WBA are really struggling too and from what I know will be sacking Mason on Saturday if they lose, we can get something out of this if we show up. Ronald surely must be dropped if we are to have a chance, Its been a long time since I have seen such a poor winger play for the Swans, if there is an offer on the table in January I would bite their hands off. Key unfortunately just isn't suited to a back 3, he needs to play as a traditional right back in a back 4. Unlike Ronald he does work his socks off and IMO plays for the badge, just doesnt fit with our current style but could be decent at this level in the right team and set up. Vig needs a shake up too, Fisher hasn't done anything wrong this season so deserves a chance.

There's also Rushall Olympic FC who are about 20 minutes away in Aldridge, Walsall that usually host a bus full of Swans fans before the WBA games (Bridgend Jacks I think).

Not strangling anyone's opinions or asking anyone to keep anything to themselves so I think you may have misread my post??

Definition of 'Jumpy' - A fan that tends to over react and spread doom after every loss (even if these are after six straight wins).

All opinions are valid in my book, even the jumpy ones.....
