From A Vale Point Of View

Port Vale - The Opposition Perspective

Why not visit our sponsors lounge

Stephen Holmes caught up with Port Vale fan Glenn Oliver ahead of the Easter Monday clash and asked him for some views on the game, their season and Swansea City

1. What do you see as your chances on the 9th April?

Will you be happy with a draw?? Will you be playing for a draw???

Are PV attack minded away from home??

I see our chances as good; overall, I think it will be an even game, which could go either way.

We'll certainly be going all-out for a win.

We are playing a lot better now than when you pinched the points up at our place. : )

My main concern is that the results before then should mean that we both still have plenty to play for in terms of reaching the play-offs.

2. Who should we look out for?

Sodje seems to be in the goals lately? Is he part of a 2 - 3 man attack or does he play up there on his own?? What's his strike rate like away from Vale Park?

Leon Constantine is always likely to get a goal, Danny Whitaker is a very intelligent and energetic midfielder, Joe Anyon is a very young goalie, who got his chance because of injury to Mark Goodlad, and has grabbed it, with some excellent performances.

With Akpo Sodje, you know you will always get 110%, so our fans love him. His first touch and shooting accuracyhave beenhis mainweaknesses, but he has been working hard with the coaching staff and has significantly improved in the course of the season, and has the natural abilities to develop further still. He was awesome at Rotherham, knocking in 4 goals a couple of weeks ago, and I'm sure he'll be looking for more at the Liberty.

We don't have a fixed formation which we always play; the coaching staff vary it to counter the strengths and exploit the weaknesses of the opposition.

3. Is there anyone in the Swansea side that you fear?

Is there anyone in the Swansea side that you feel you would like in the PV side?

Lee Trundle is clever and skilful; we had actually signed him on pre-contract forms before you signed him, but the administrator (prior to our takeover) refused to let Vale sign him; we'd be glad to take him now, if you don't mind. : )

Kevin McLeod would be useful, as we sold our then first-choice left-winger, Jeff Smith,in January, and he is a classy player. Of course, that was assuming you had held onto him........

4. How would you say your season has gone compared to the plan last August?

You had a dip in form part way through the season......did you bring players into the side to address this or was it justa change of fortune?

Would you have settled for mid table in August or was it in your mind that the play offs would be the minimum?

The glass is more than half-full.

Some of our Cup exploits have been excellent, beating Preston, QPR and Norwich, and giving Spurs a big fright at their place.

The League has been frustratingly inconsistent - at our best, we are a match for anyone, but for some games against lower teams we have just not turned up.

A small squad, hit by injuries and suspensions, didn't help our cause, and we've done better since we had most players again available.

We always aim for the play-offs as an absolute minimum - if you don't shoot for the top, there's not much point starting the season.

5. How disappointed were you to lose out on Marcus Painter??

Not hugely; I would have seen him as a useful squad player but not a key signing

Anything else you can think of would be great.

I've been working in Swansea the last 2.5 years and really like the place. In some ways, it's like my home town of Stoke-on-Trent, rebuilding itself after the coal, steel and manufacturing industries were largely killed off. Just as Swansea City are playing their part in the regeneration of your area, Port Vale are a key player in the North Staffs Regeneration Zone efforts. Our current projects are a Childrens Centre and an Enterprise Centre which are now being built within the part of our main stand which your travelling supporters would have seen as unfinished. We are proud of our contribution to our local community.

Anyway, here's to a great attacking game of football on April 9th, and then another game in the Play-offs Final for both of us.
