Roberto Martinez reveals his admiration for the way that Tony Mowbray and West Brom went about their business

Roberto was speaking after his side held the Baggies to a 0-0 draw at the weekend with the mutual admiration from both managers on display.

Martinez was refusing to get carried away by his side having arguably the best of the ninety minutes but he was naturally pleased with the way that the game progressed and told the Western Mail “Tony Mowbray has been a great example of how to win the Championship title by playing football and I will always respect him for that

“But at the moment it would be a bit silly to compare ourselves to West Brom, I don’t think we are on the same level.

“West Brom had something like £20-25m worth of players last year and that helps. We are on a different level and we just need to make sure we find our feet in the Championship, so that one day we can compete at that level. We need to go step by step.

“It’s important we realise this was a pre-season friendly. We shouldn’t get carried away.

“I think it would be a big mistake to try to assess this game from the result point of view. There are other areas you have to look at.

“You can see that the boys have the fitness and intensity under their belts and now is the time to sharpen things up. Obviously we are not where we want to be but overall this exercise was very, very positive.

“We know where we want to be and we will keep improving. But I’m sure Tony will agree, you cannot take clear conclusions from these games.”
