John Baker was a goalkeeper who was a product of the club's youth policy, graduating to a professional contract in the Summer of 2002. Unfortunately for John, despite being a regular fixture on the bench in games, he never made it through to play a game for the first team.

He was released by the board in the Summer of 2003 having never played a single game for the first team. Performances in the reserves indicated that he was a promising keeper but with two fine keepers ahead of him in the form of Matt Gilks and Neil Edwards, it was always going to take either suspensions or injuries for him to get a game.

The writing was on the wall for Baker in the Spring of 2002-3, when then manager Paul Simpson decided to bring in a back up keeper from outside the club as cover for Matt Gilks when Edwards was ruled out for the season.
