Joe Thompson is a young attacking player who has come through the ranks at Spotland, and has since promoted himself to the fringes of the first team.

He can play on either wing, and also up front, and has made a handful of appearances for the club so far. He made his debut at the back end of the 2005-6 season as a late sub against Carlisle in the final home match.

By the end of the 2006-7 season, he had chalked up fourteen first team appearances, and he was very much part of the squad which showed great form in the final few weeks of that season.

He came to prominence to Dale fans when from almost out of nowhere, he was named as the best apprentice in the Division in a national awards. Joe will quite proudly have his "Apprentice Award - Coca-Cola League 2 - sponsored by Nivea for Men Weekend Wonders" trophy sitting proudly on his mantelpiece at home.

There is still much to learn for Thompson but at just turned eighteen, he very much has time on his hands. He is highly thought of at the football and he was rewarded for his efforts, when he was awarded his first professional contract in the Summer of 2007.
