Agyemang looks ahead, Adebola potentially arriving, Crowther heads south - news round up

After an injury hit season in which he has scored just once Patrick Agyemang is looking forward to next year and hoping for better luck. He may have more competition for his place by then with QPR apparently leading the chase to sign Dele Adebola.

Agyemang told the Kilburn Times: “Even before the injury I was only playing here and there. We had different managers coming and going and we were only playing one up front. This season has been so stop-start. It was only when Paulo Sousa arrived that I started playing regularly and playing well - the only thing was that I wasn't scoring. Even though I wasn't scoring, the team were and we had a good unbeaten run. I really did feel Paulo liked me as a player and that helps, it gives you confidence even though I wasn't getting the goals I wanted to get.

“The muscle's not going to be perfect for another few months, but it's not bothered me when I'm running or striking the ball. That was my fear, really, when it came to striking the ball. When I got injured we had shooting practice in training and the pitch was frozen. All of a sudden it just popped and I knew there was a problem. It'd be nice to play against Preston - they'll need to win and I'm not sure what sort of reception I'll get from their fans. But I haven't done anything bad to them so far."

Joining Agyemang in attack next season could be 34 year old Bristol City striker Dele Adebola. The veteran target man, who has developed a habit of scoring against QPR over the years, is currently being linked with half the Championship and Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday are both sniffing around. Several agencies report QPR to be leading the chase although the Kilburn Times reports that Adebola’s desire to sign a two year contract could see the transfer run into problems. Rangers are said to be offering a one year contract with a further option to extend next summer depending on appearances made by the player.

Meanwhile, in an exercise in stating the bleedin obvious, captain Martin Rowlands has pinpointed where the problems may have been this season and what we could do with tidying up before August. Rowlands said: “We have made more progress. We have finished higher in the league than we have in previous years. Everyone is disappointed. Everyone wants to make the play-offs or automatic promotion.

“Next season is going to be a big year with players coming and going - as they do at every club - and hopefully we can push on and achieve something like Wolves have achieved this year.

“Obviously the club needs stability. It has not had stability because there have been a lot of managerial changes in recent years but that is not for us to talk about. But obviously the club does need some stability having a manager in charge and hopefully he will pick the right system and the right players to get us to where we all want to be.”

Striker Dexter Blackstock scored the second goal of his loan spell with Nottingham Forest in a draw at Blackpool last week - that result and a subsequent 2-0 victory against Coventry in which Blackstock set up a goal for James Perch, means Forest will be playing Championship football next season. That means money will be available for Billy Davies to strengthen his team and bids of £1.5m for Blackstock and £800k for goalkeeper Lee Camp who was on loan there earlier in the season are anticipated.

Blackstock told the Nottingham Evening Post: “Since I have come in, we have drawn all three away and won two at home. I am enjoying it and everything about the club is great – the fan base, ground, training ground and the management staff. It is a massive club."

Perhaps not surprisingly there were no QPR representitives in the PFA Championship team of the year although Coventry City, equally as bad as us this year, managed to get two. Goalkeeper Radek Cerny, who leads the league in clean sheets this year, can count himself unlucky to miss out to Keiren Westwood and I know who I’d rather have out of Kaspars Gorkss and Richard Stearman. Better luck next year lads.

Another goalkeeper at Loftus Road who has had a bad week is Reece Crowther - the youth team graduate was released on a free transfer yesterday without ever making a senior appearance for the R’s. Wellington Pheonix who play in the Australian A-League have offered the 20-year-old a trial, Crowther grew up in Australia after being born in America.

Youth team graduate Chris Arthur is also set to leave Loftus Road this summer although he won’t be joining Lincoln after an unsuccessful trial. Imps manager Peter Jackson said: “There was a winger called Chris Arthur, who played against us for Kettering in the FA Cup earlier in the season. He did well and, having watched him, I gave him the chance to show us what he could do. Chris then joined us for a week's training, but I sent him back early because he simply didn't have the desire and passion that I need.”

Off the pitch the club’s end of season trip to Bahrain has been cancelled. The team were due to play a friendly match against the Bahrain national team in May as part of the Gulf Air sponsorship, although privately players had expressed misgivings about an extra game at the end of a long season. Now though the trip has been called off as a number of senior figures involved have to attend a FIFA meeting instead. Vice President of the Bahrain Football Association, Shaikh Ali Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, said: "It is with deep regret that we have been forced into making this decision. We were all really looking forward to welcoming Queens Park Rangers Football Club to our Kingdom, but the FIFA meeting is of paramount importance to us and so we were left with no option.

“We are committed to playing this fixture again in the future and we will be working closely with the club and Gulf Air, their shirt sponsors, to ensure we can fulfill this match in the future."

QPR's Deputy Managing Director, Ali Russell, said: "It's a great shame for us all, but we understand the reasons behind it. However, the club is committed to developing our relationship with the Bahrain Football Association, and we will be doing everything in our powers to get this fixture played in the future."

Part owner of QPR Lakshmi Mittal remains top of the Sunday Times rich list with a personal fortune of £10.88bn however that is a substantial drop of £16.9bn. Bernie Ecclestone lost £934m leaving him on £1.46bn.

In former QPR news Tommy Doherty has been named in the League Two team of the season for the second year running thanks to his form for Wycombe. Injury prone centre half Pat Kanyuka faces a bleak future at Swiundon after picking up yet another serious knock to his knee. Manager Danny Wilson said: “He’s out of contract but at this moment in time I wouldn’t like to comment on it. We’ll have to see the extent of it first. He’s had a few injuries this season and it’s disappointing from his point of view. I quite like the lad and think he can play, but he’s had a lot of injuries so we’ll have to take all that into consideration.” Kevin Gallen has expressed a desire to stay with Luton Town for next season despite their relegation to the Conference.
