Woodgate
Woodgate "Leeds are better than Spurs"!
Friday, 24th Oct 2008 16:33

Jonathan Woodgate reckons that the current Spurs side are worse than the Leeds side who were relegated from the Premiership since 2003/04.

Whilst part of me wishes Woodgate would shut his gob, because after all we don't like talking about our painful past and I don't really give a stuff about him anymore or those mouthy cockney upstarts (in fact I'm loving every minute of it after they nicked Gus from us a year ago!), he has got a point!

Despite Radio Five Live wrongly saying this morning that he was in that Leeds side who went down (when in fact he had left in January 2003 to join Newcastle), Woodgate would have known that team very well and it still contained the likes of Paul Robinson, Mark Viduka, Jermaine Pennant, James Milner and Alan Smith, plus there was the likes of Scott Carson, Aaron Lennon and Matthew Kilgallon on the fringes. Looking back, because our off-field problems were so-bad back then, I think we all resigned ourselves to what our fate was going to be on the pitch eg. relegation. But on that fateful day, May 2nd 2004 when our worst fears were confirmed with a 4-1 hammering at Bolton, our team that day was:

Robinson, Kelly, Harte, Duberry, Caldwell, Matteo, Milner, McPhail, Pennant, Smith, Viduka SUBS: Carson, Lennon, Barmby, Wilcox, Kilgallon.

Nine of the above are still with Premiership clubs four and a half years later!

Woodgate said of tottering Tottenham, "Leeds had a better team than we have got right now.

"They went down eventually and we really have got to roll up our sleeves without question, because I am telling you now it is going to be hard."
