Jesse Marsch Is Not Nathan Jones Mk 2.
at 18:52:51

I'm neither warm nor cold on Jesse M. I like his passion and he has a good record with working with young players as I understand it. His technical area behavior - some times almost arrogant - worries me a little, but at the same time, if he can galvanize our strengthened squad and find our best 11 quickly and get points on the board with whatever behavior, I'll be happy.

Jones was a huge risk and big mistake in hindsight.

What a strange season this has been - buying so many youngsters in the summer but no class striker which we needed the most, -> then we sack RH and get Nathan Jones in and use a January Saints record fortune, splashing the cash, to get 2 exciting attacking players in (+ a championship right back for 750.000 pounds) + we recall Bednarek from loan in stead of Tella, who does so well in Burnley.

'Good' and 'bad' question marks all over the place.

Now, with 16 games back in the PL, bottom of the table, we are in a situation where we - with a far better squad than when the season took off - could be clever and lucky enough to sign up a new manager who will actually get us out of the bottom three with 48 points to play for.

Is that manager Jesse Marsch? I'm not saying he isn't. I hope he is, if we take him.
But what about Nigel Pearson?

Anyway, all the best to Saints and my fellow Saints supporters from a Danish Saints fan since January 1980 <3

Let's hope we can still turn this around in the PL and get as far as possible in the FA Cup.
If we could do a 2014/2015 Leicester City like relegation escape miracle, it would give me great happiness. With or without Nigel Pearson.

Southampton V Blackpool The Preview
at 17:48:15

My verdict is a deserved win based on our first half dominance.

Don't know why our (much changed but) ok playing team let Blackpool back with approximately 15 minutes to go, 2-0 down, when they scored to 2-1. Before that they actually had a great chance to equalize when our offside "trap" was non-existing, but Padeva didn't hit the target with Willy Caballero out of position (after Willy had bravely saved Padevas first attempt)

8 changes from the line up vs Newcastle was expected, and the only player i.m.o. who really didn't perform particularly well was Maitland-Niles at right back. Too sloppy.

2 fine goals by Perraud - the first a direct freekick through the wall and into the far corner - the second after fine opportunistic ball-carrying by Perraud towards and into Blackpools penalty area before a one-two with Mara and then a fine first touch by Perraud before he hammered the ball in the net. 2-0.

A very good performance in defense by Lyanco i.m.o. and a ditto in attack by Edozie, who twisted and turned well, especially in the first half.

The rest did ok, though Mara disappointed me apart from getting an assist. I think Nathan Jones (NJ) - overall - will be ok satisfied with the performance and the WIN :)

On to round 5 in The FA Cup and on to the second leg of the League Cup vs Saudi Arabia United in 3 days time.

A win tonight by 1 or 2 goals would be brilliant for Saints. Even a draw gives us a chance.
I hope there's something great in the air for Saints at Saint Mary's tonight <3

Saints winning the League Cup would mean the world to me.

Southampton At Everton The Preview
at 11:50:23

I agree with most comments. Good article Nick.
I hate Goodison Park as much as any, but there are some positive circumstances before we go to Goodison today. One of them is Evertons players', managers' and fans' questionable mood...

I'm afraid, unfortunately, that Romeo Lavia is not fully fit, so I expect him to be replaced.
Elyounoussi played ok when he came on vs City - in a deeper role than usually, but maybe Aribo plays from the start (in a deeper role) or why not Alcarez?

This is the 4th match in 14 days, so maybe Arma gets a rest and Orsic starts? I expect Adams to start in stead of Mara, who ran his lungs out 2.5 days ago.

There will and should be changes in the team that beat City 2.5 days ago to add energy to the team.

Good job NJ, good job Saints.
I understand and accept decent critizism, but fook the "supporters" of this club who gets a hard on from critiZising everything about Saints, 24/7.
They are not real supporters and I don't like these people.

Saints 2 - 0 M. City :) -> bring on N'Castle in the semis.

We have spent 20 mill. pounds in the January window (Saints January spending record?) if the Carlos Alcaraz rumour is correct. So......, we might have a better team pretty soon. Let's try to be positive, at least :)

110 % behind Nathan Jones (NJ). Let's give the guy a chance and see what he can do in the next 6-7 matches. Watching Che Adams putting his arm around NJ as the two of them began to walk off the pitch at Selhurst Park gave me an indication that NJ could be in the proces of getting the players' trust. I hope I'm right.

After watching the pre-match conference for tonights game I actually thought Nathan Jones did a good job answering all questions. The man is certainly not stupid, and I thought he was pretty humble too.
Please, let's stay together as fans and support both our team and manager.
Tonights game is in many ways a free hit, so let's save the nail biting for saturday when we meet (a very mediocre) Neverton and just give our players and manager some good, old noisy support as we - in my opinion - did so well at Selhurst Park.

Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict

Good article Nick.
There are more positives than negatives before Palace, and the only thing, I think, needs further comment, is the fact that Ruben Selles seems like an important assistant for Ralphie when it comes to discussing game management, tactics, formation etc.

Southampton At Bournemouth The Verdict
at 14:38:37

I don't disagree that JWP did fight like a dog to help his team.
Now the point against West Ham feel (even) better.
I thought we saw some good performances in there vs Bournemouth. Jaleta-Car seemed calm, cool and collected and made sure Solanke didn't shine. Other mature performances from Bazunu, Perraud,
a much better looking Ainsley M-N, KWP and Salisu and everybody ran themselves into the ground to protect that lead. Substitutes did well to help us keep the ball, Lyanco fought with his life for that clean sheet, and Che Adams was man of the match.
Looks like the bleeding has stopped. At least till' the Arse game.

Is Duje Caleta-Car Finally The Experienced Central Defender We Need
at 17:03:22

For the record I believe VVD left a year later than Fonte - in January 2018.
And yeah, we have missed an experienced CB since VVD stopped playing for us, and I think the Croatian sounds like a very good addition to our defense - on his merits.
Is he primarily left or right footed? It's probably an advantage to have two right footed and 2 left footed CB's in the squad.

Southampton Legend David Armstrong Mourned By Saints Fans.

Yes, tripple as bald as Antonio Conte (who wears a permanent wig), Mr. Armstrong was instantly recognizable. Cult hero type of player, indeed. Nice that someone mentioned Armstrongs participance in the greatest team goal of all times (ultimately hammered in by Mick Channon).

West Ham United Interested In Jan Bednarek
at 00:15:15

I didn' like his attitude vs Spurs and when he was substituted vs Leeds. I've noticed that he has been quite highly valued at transfermarkt in the last couple of years and all in all I think we should sell him at a good price and spend the money on - for example - a striker. He has been a good servant to our club and I wish him well if he leaves.

at 23:58:46

Can't believe it. Absolutely guttered to hear about his passing.
Only a few years ago I was thrilled by listening to my Saints hero Armstrong co-commentating a Saints match as a stand-in for Dave Merrington. My favourite player in the 80's. Watched him play at The Dell in 1985: I was 17 and totally star-struck of him, and of course he was man of the match that day. Magnificent, very consistent and technically skilled, strong, goal assisting and goal scoring midfielder.
Condolences, respect and endless sympathy to his friends and family in this difficult time - from a Danish guy who loves The Saints and have supported them for 43 years. By the way I believe David had his England debut vs Denmark, in Denmark, in a 2-2 Euro qualifying match.
R.I.P Mr. Armstrong <3

Southampton At Leicester City The Verdict
at 00:25:58

Youngest of any team fielded in the PL since 2017 and one of our holding midfielders 18½ years old (and has played every minute of the first 3 matches!!!). Ralph has so big balls, and I'm absolutely delighted that we managed to beat Leicester City, away from home, with such a young team and seem to have finally found out that a back 4 is the right thing.
Many find performances. KWP, Armel B.K. and Che Adams our 3 best on the day.
New signings settling in well and great to see Ralph listen to his assistants on the touchline and do succesful substitutions.
