I think that is fanciful, in this electoral system. Bottom line is you have to win over 50% of the seats there are no winners made by increasing your vote in your own safe seats you have to win in constiuencies that the other side holds. People dont radically change FPP is won or lost in the centre in a hundred or so constituencies. The two main parties have to be broad coalitions to win but activists are always to the left or right of the public by nature. That means compromise and having to suck up things you might not agree with to get in power to do some of the things you do.

If you want purity of representation then you need PR and multi parties but then in order to have a functioning government you need a coalition and that will also involve compromise.

It is true that you can shift the centre in politics but through cultural shift but that happens slowly over time normally.

Also important to remember that 2017 was as much a Brexit election Hard v Soft as 2019 was and the "bedroom tax" blew up in the Tories face in the campaign.

I dont think there is any speculation to it.

You have a demographic problem. The post war baby boomers have a disproportionate number, they are ageing, they use more healthcare services and will not be economically productive. The younger generations passed wealth to the boomers through asset price rises namely property. In addition additional costs were added in the terms of education costs. The rise in the property market which makes many many things more expensive from rents to childcare to anything that needs land, has led to people having children much later in life and less of them.

In short you dont have enough people economically active to support the cost of a large ageing population living longer. You either drastically increase productivity, have people of working age come into the country, or be economically poorer.

You can encourage people to have more babies but that takes 25 years to flow through.

AI might impact productivity in a positive way but then you have to redistribute the wealth.

We've known this for 30 years and the same has happened at other points in history all over the world as well.

The problem is politicians are too scared to tell people the truth, and its all to easy for populists to sell the lie that immigrants are taking away when in truth they are maintaining our wealth

Real Politik though,

To win an election in your party you have to carry the left if you want to get elected, and then win over the centre right (because you have to win seats from the other side) to win a general election,

The opposite is the same for the Tories.

If you get elected to leader playing to your party activists and then continue that to the country you dont get elected.

Examples for Labour

Foot
Kinnock
Milliband
Corbyn

For the Tories

Hague
Duncan Smith
Howard
Sunak

Blair won leaning right but with some left populist meat (minimum wage, education etc) and the government moved left over time especially economically

Boris won through a combo of Brexit, Farage standing his party down and leaning left economically

Cameron won leaning left socially

I generally judge by the amount of duff against the great.

Marr / Morrissey for me are the most consistent
Robert Smith as well
Damon Albarn for variety of styles
Holland - Dozier - Holland for Motown

Interesting reading through the posts about who to vote for, the bottom line is in our Electoral system of first past the post you either vote for the incumbent or you vote for the candidate most likely to beat the incumbent that you can just about weather.

The reality is that in our system, for their to be a change in government, you have to win voters from the other side, so Blair won 97 by leaning right, Cameron 2010 by leaning left and Starmer can only win by leaning right. Even Thatcher toned it down in 79. Then each government will move over time towards its membership (right or left) initially with a few bones and if they win again more and more so.

So lefties bemoaning Starmer having moved to the right or not being pure enough have to recognise that a "workers" party vote is essentially a vote for the tories and at the other end of the scale the same for Reform / labour. Until we change our voting system that is the essence of it.

I want a change of government, this one is useless and corrupt, in my constituency only one other party can win, I'm a member of another party but I'll vote for whoever can beat the tories

Opening day of the season
at 08:47 10 May 2024

I don't go to away games (I'd end up being divorced) but I do now watch every away game and I pay for it (thank the lord for VPN)

In principle I dont have issue with Sky showing more games or showing games on a Saturday. I do however have a big issue with 12:30 games. I see no reason anymore not to offer these games at 3pm. I don't believe it would affect attendances, going to a "live game" being in the ground is a different experience, watching football on TV is like watching a gig on TV, its ok but its not the same. I think the two can coincide.

But 12:30 Saturday, 5pm Saturday, 12:30 Sunday I hate these kick off times, they are awkward, they infringe on kids sport times, they also usually produce crap games and crap atmospheres

It's truly astonishing that given where we were at Watford and the first 1/3rd of the season that taken from Jan1st our form for 2024 puts us in the playoffs.

Certainly looked good enough.

As did Dixon Bonner who we should certainly be giving a contract renewal, a good passer, tired 2nd half though, but not played for a while since Hodge etc came in

I guess the point is, that jeopardy has made this season so interesting and involving and having something on every game, with a team improving all the time I would argue is why are stadium has been full every week especially since. As Clive says in his report that is now a major foundation for the club to build on

His best save last night was given as a goal kick!

I think all the things that have been said before are true, he cost us points, his kicking is not great, and he is less mobile than he was, but he had a big big game against Leeds and was pretty faultless, certainly his best game of the season.

We were 8/10 all over the pitch with Field and Chair 9s however given Leeds keep trying to buy him cut price Chair was always going to turn up, and was the decisive factor with a goal 2 assists and a number of shots that were saved / deflected out for corners etc

See Warburton’s interview with Finney for “first loans” and Jack Clark. I think we went for the extra utility midfielder because of Field and Colback suspension situation at the time. Would
Not be surprised to see Hodge back next season

We are not safe!!!
at 12:48 22 Apr 2024

Personally I prefer to go with the pessimism and still consider us to be doomed, until we are not. Its worked for me this year.

Leeds is one of those games that can go a number of ways. Chair will be wanting to impress as they have fancied him for some time, Marti has to get his tactics bang on, dangerous for us to go too open. If they score early we have to ensure we dont harm our GD.

Forget the other games its in our hands and will be to the last game that's all we can ask for. 2 draws or 1 win required

I can't believe how bad Blackburn have been, yes you have to give credit to Wednesday but they were gifted 2 goals , Blackburn have barely created a chance

The pessimist in me sayswego down on 50 pts with equal goal difference in the team above but on goals scored, such is the craziness of this season

I would say that's very harsh, yes lots did not come off, but actually lots did and he was involved in most of our good attacking play. He's corners yesterday were as good as anything we've seen all season. A 6 at worst

We have a number of players defensively that read the game so well, both CB's and Field in particularly which means they dont need to be lightening as they are already 2 paces ahead in their positioning. If only it was the same with the attackers
