Morgan Schneiderlin Draws Titanic Comparisons.
at 16:48:13

Morgan is of course a special case compared to most of the players we have sold to "bigger" clubs in the last couple of summers. He stands out because most of the others improved their chances of regular appearances for their country by moving whereas Morgan's place in the French team was already assured. He is possibly now on the verge of losing that place not through any fault of his own but by his club manager's reluctance to pick him. He should still get into the Euro squad but what happens after that? If Mourinho does take over at Man Utd then I can see him becoming a centre point of the team but his best hope of regular Champions League and international football is probably to move to one of the big French clubs, PSG or Marseilles maybe.

Liverpool Hit Stumbling Block In Clyne Deal
at 23:11:06

Don't forget there is a 20% sell on fee payable to Palace, which is why we need to screw every last penny out of Brendan and his directors. I would rather Clyne stayed and signed a new contract, but if he won't sign a new deal we have to sell now, for the highest possible price.

Saints V Hull City The Verdict
at 14:18:45

With the benefit of hindsight, this was a game to rest Victor and avoid the situation we are now in, missing him for 2 games where we will need his strength more than we did yesterday. As said above, this is now Reed's chance to step up. I wasn't impressed by Steven Davis yesterday and I hope JWP replaces him against Stoke. The big question for me is whether to start Mané or Tadić alongside Pellè and Long.

TAKE THE MONEY SPURS AND LET BALE GO TO REAL MADRID SAYS MATT LE TISSIER
at 12:33:46

What Le Tiss actually said was: “Bale has to listen to what his heart is telling him and not make a move that is bad for him as a person,” said Le Tissier, below.

“It is not such a bad option to stay and become the greatest player in a club’s history. I had no regrets about doing that at Southampton and if Bale stays he will be knocking on the door of the Champions League and who knows what he could achieve at Tottenham.

“Stay there. Become a legend like Glenn Hoddle. He should at least consider that as an option"

That doesn't sound to me like he is urging Bale to go, or, indeed, urging Spurs to let hi go.

Saints Right Back Worry
at 11:07:36

Calum Chambers is surely the natural choice as backup for Nathan Clyne: granted he hasn't made a senior start yet but neither had Luke Shaw this time last year. I would rather our efforts in the market now concentrate on bring in Ever banega and Pablo Osvaldo to complete a brilliant window, rather than a backup player in a position we already have plenty of cover if Jack Cork is included. Anyway, it's all irrelevant, Clyne will be back in time for West Brom, along with Yoshida and Ramirez hopefully.

Saints At Everton The Verdict
at 14:48:37

On the subject of Lambert and Rodriguez playing together, I think this is a variation on the old argument of whether Lampard and Gerrard should play together for England. The fact is that both Rickie and J-Rod are just too similar in style to warrant being selected together. Rodriguez was bought for the future as a natural successor to Rickie, and in case Lambert couldn't hack it at the top level. Playing them both on Saturday was a waste of a place, whereas picking Puncheon, Guly, or, for goodness sake, Mayuka, would have made a lot more sense.

Defensively I would agree that we are stuck with what we have until January, and the easiest short-term solution would be to make Yoshida captain and let him select who else should be in the back four. He speaks a lot of sense.

I also agree that the most glaring absence was Morgan Schneiderlin, who would have tightened things up in front of the defence. I just hope he isn't out for long.

Saints At Everton The Preview
at 10:42:28

I would first take issue with the word "mediocrity" applied to a mid-table position at this time. If Saints were to win tomorrow and end up with 6 points from 6 games this would represent a fantastic start to the season given the fixtures we have had, i.e. far from mediocre.

I can't see a problem with starting with the XI that started the second half against Villa. The back four of Richardson - Fonte - Yoshida - Clyne looked solid, and is probably the best we have, at least until January.

No, we can loan out to clubs in the Football League for the remainder of the loan window, but no loans in to the Premier League are allowed.

Saints have only submitted 23 names in their first-team squad. Does this not mean we can add a couple of free agents at any time, or am I just being over-optimistic?

Saints V Wigan Athletic The Preview

Good article, and I agree with your formation and most of the lineup, although I think JWP will start ahead of Davis again but make way for the last 30 minutes again.

Just one thing though, you mention the "battle hardened troops" who kept us in the Prem in the 90's, but didn't mention the general who led them with his genius for making and scoring goals. I refer of course to Matt Le Tissier, and I wonder if there is a comparison between the young Le Tiss and the much-discussed Gaston Ramirez, who if we get him might just make the difference between struggling for survival this time around, and going on to greater things?

Half Term Report
at 14:30:06

A good summary of the first half of the season. The only part I would have an issue with is that we played better in the first 12 games than the next 11. Obviously results-wise this is true, but don't forget that for the first few games we were something of an unknown quantity and may have caught a few teams by surprise. Once we maintained the same form into September and October, though, we would have been under the microscope of every manager in the league, all desperate to find a way of stopping us. I think apart from the Bristol City, Doncaster, and Blackpool games which were all injury-affected, the team's form has not been that much worse than at the beginning of the season, it's just that, as Rickie Lambert himself said the other day, other teams have sussed us out.

A new signing or two, plus the return of Connolly and Chaplow, and we'll be fine for the second half, and should achieve at least a 2 points per game average from now on.
