Did history just repeat itself with Michu and Vipotnik?
at 20:35 28 Oct 2026

One of the biggest criticisms is that we’re not getting results against promotion contenders and most of our points come against the weaker teams.

So why would we stop doing what has clearly been working against the weaker teams?

It’s great to say we need more creativity, but then we need to look at what we forego to get that.

It would be quite a rational argument with four full defenders, a protective midfielder and the fullbacks only got forward ‘occasionally’. If people genuinely think that’s the case, it may be worth paying attention to how Tymon and Lissah position themselves on Saturday, or are we somehow assuming it’s a conventional back four?

I get QPR was horrible, but you’d honestly think we’ve been playing Michael Duff football and propping the league up from some of the comments.

Swans defender Stephen Welsh : Is exhaustion playing a part ?
at 14:27 28 Oct 2026

Yes and you could wake Stephen Welsh up at four in the morning, after a three day bender, kickoff half an hour later and he’d easily be the best player on the pitch in those games.

However, being even slightly off the boil against elite footballers is going to result in making mistakes, conceding chances and losing games.

And there it is.

The thing that people aren’t grasping is the Yorkshire miners weren’t playing to the standard or intensity Championship players do. Any of them came in for Welsh after night shift and they’d have a really tough time

It’s not normal person fatigue and exhaustion, it’s being half a second too slow to react or not picking out the right pass because you’ve switched off mentally for an instant.

It needs a better description than exhaustion, because every time it happens you’ll get someone saying they did 50 hour weeks at British Steel and still played twice on the weekend.

Exhausted and fatigued are relative and probably aren’t the best descriptions.

If you asked Steven Welsh to slot in for your local pub team, he could probably do it five times a week. We’re talking about being too fatigued to play effectively against elite athletes, not just generally knackered.

‘Four full defenders’ implies Tymon and either Lissah or Key are almost always in defensive positions. They aren’t, they are an important part of our attack and we need a midfielder covering them.

Despite last weekend’s hammering, we are way ahead of where any of us or the pundits predicted. More wins than losses and draws combined.

If we were in fifteenth place with more losses than wins it would be a different story.

Of course if we break that list down, Josh Key, Ronald and Moussa Yeo don’t play international football. Cameron Burgess does, but he was out with a long term injury well before the break.

I do really enjoy the reports, but I can’t help feel there was one sentence in there designed to trigger the predictable response it got.

The only position we haven’t really got covered is Eustquios and I haven’t seen Iorpenda play so maybe he does that? I’m sure there will be plenty of rotation over the next couple of months.

Gone are the days we had to rely on Cabango and Darling or Grimes and Fulton all season because we didn’t have real backup.

He’s certainly in danger of becoming the next Kyle Joseph. Mentions every time he scores in an inferior league

For context, Middlesbrough drew with Cardiff at home last week. We may well be comparing their best performance of the season to our worst.

It looks a very deliberate policy to me. The two players on our books suited to the Dobbie role are Walta and Bobby Wales.

I haven’t seen a lot of either of them and Matos may just feel neither are good enough, but it looks to me like he isn’t interested in that type of player. He loves his workhorses.

Mistake? I think not having central creativity in the squad is yeah.

I think the mistake is judging Just as a #10. We don’t play with one, he’s just the most advanced of a midfield three.

When you’ve got a front three and fullbacks who get forward as much as ours do, one of the midfielders is spending a lot of time covering teammates being high up the pitch when we get turned over, the other two then have to play like conventional midfielders, not flair players. It’s the main reason I wouldn’t want Eom in there. That role isn’t just about unlocking defences.

As for Just, I get the criticism. He’s shown flashes, but hasn’t been anywhere near enough consistent. I also don’t think he’s aggressive enough when we have our 5/10 minute spells of intense pressing. As I’ve said a few times though, he’s looked a lot better than some of our best players did in their first few months. Everyone quite rightly wanted them to be given more time.

I’d still like a Walta type in the squad every game. Starting one would mean putting the breaks on Tymon and Lissah/Key IMO.

That wasn’t our normal gameplan. Both teams went at it from the start and we were way more open defensively than we have been all season.

How often do we leave players unmarked on the six yard line? We did for both of their opening goals and they cut through us with ease for the penalty.

Everyone knows our gameplan. It didn’t work because we didn’t execute it.

Edit - to answer your question, no. I don’t think anyone played well. We were well off the boil individually and collectively.

International football is so evil it even made Tymon and Widell have bad games yesterday.

I was expecting to see him and Ross Stewart in the second half. Possibly Matos didn’t want to bring Monga into a flat team going through the motions.

I expect a lot more next week. Eom starting and hopefully Monga getting a cameo.

That’s the best summary I’ve read. Forget tactics and team selection, we just collectively didn’t show up. No excuse for it.

Need a big response next week. Anyone 50/50 on going, now is the time to get behind them.

They wouldn’t have been confident of putting 5 past us at 3.08 either. They probably won’t do it again all season.

I agree, Matos has a huge week ahead of him. Last week could have gone either way against a top team. Today was different. We let ourselves down big time.
