Watford 1 v 1 Portsmouth
EFL Championship
Wednesday, 21st January 2026 Kick-off 19:45
Southampton V Sheffield United The Verdict
Thursday, 22nd Jan 2026 12:16

The changes were rung and in the main worked as Tonda Eckert re jigged both his starting line up and formation and in doing so earned our first win in 7 games or is it 8, it doesn't matter the important thing was the three points.

Tonda Eckert made numerous changes to the side that lost to Hull City at the weekend and he also sent the team out in a 4-4-2 formation with Elias Jelert and Welington in the full back positions with the two central defenders being Harwood-Bellis & Jack Stephens.

The midfield was easy to predict, Fellows, Jander, Downes & Scienza with Finn Azaz & Ross Stewart in the attacking roles.

It was a strong bench, boosted by the return of Shea Charles after over 3 months out with injury.

Saints started well and seemed to have more confidence about them with the new formation and it soon paid dividends with Leo Scienza cutting in and hitting a goalbound shot which took a wicked deflection and wrong footed the keeper, most of the rather sparse crowd didn't care, we were a goal up.

The pattern of the game was set and Saints should really have doubled their lead in the first half, but went in at half time good value for money.

After the break the visitors started to get more possession, but in truth did little with it and in the main Saints looked comfortable, a flurry of substitutions at certain times, helped with fresh legs, Ross Steward first off on the hour mark for Adam Armstrong followed by a triple on 78 minutes Jay Robinson on for Scienza, Ryan Manning for Wellington & Shea Charles for Finn Azaz with Charles being played in a more forward role to press from the front rather than deeper in midfield.

But we almost threw it away in the final minute when a mix up in the Saints defence saw two player go for the same ball and leave it to each other and in doing so leave it to Patrick Bamford to run through with a clear opportunity, luckily his shot was weak and it was an easy stop for Daniel Peretz in what was the Blades only meaningful attempt on target, but credit should be given to the keeper, he still had to stop it.

After that it seemed tense but we saw it out fairly comfortably with Sheffield United mainly just pumping it forward in hope more than anything else.

The most important thing though was that during this match you could see the confidence returning, things were far from perfect, but they were going in the right direction and it was a team effort.

We can go to Fratton Park on Sunday with a win behind us and turn the pressure on Pompey who although scraping out of the relegation zone with a point at Watford, could be back in it but the time we arrive in Portsmouth.

I don't think many people would argue if Tonda Eckert put out the same side on Sunday, but I think it will be the strength of our bench that will see us through this one.

There were some good individual performances worth noting, Daniel Peretz looked a lot more confident, but part of that came with having a defence that didn't expose him too much.

He made that vital save at the end and just about the only thing he did wrong was late in the second half when he came and flapped at a cross and missed.

The two full backs deserve a mention, Jelert & Welingon looked good and more to the point got the ball forward quickly, even when Welington was replaced by Manning, we stayed strong, the dye had been cast.

Good to see Shea Charles return to the fold, that can only be good for the midfield.

The return of Danny Ings to his home City brought a rather cold reaction as he was roundly booed on to the field, when he arrived into the fray on 79 minutes, however in fairness he may have forgotten to take his wallet out of his pocket and so was heavily weighed down by the cash he has earned for doing very little since he left St Mary's.

Perhaps at some stage he will reflect on the way he left Southampton FC and wished he had concentrating on chasing through balls and scoring goals rather than chasing money.

This was a timely time to get back to winning ways, just a shame that we didn't do so on Saturday, if we had beaten Hull then we would now be just 4 points off the play off spots,
this emphasises that this season is still not over yet.

The only down side was the attendance, the official attendance given was 25,967 which was disappointing in itself, but understandable on a cold night with the game watchable on Sky Sports.

But the reality was that this figure included season ticket holders and many of them did not bother going, I would at a guess say that there were no more than 23,000 in St Mary's, I Personally knew 4 season ticket holders that didn't bother going, I would guess they were joined by 3-4,000 others by the empty seats in the ground.

But a win is a win and however some supporters seem to feel, judging by the negative comments I have been reading on social media, this was never about performance it was about winning a game of football and that we did !

Only thing to add Nick is that the defence looked far more comfortable in the 4. When Wood was added for the final 5 minutes we seemed to revert to type and struggle at the back with multiple people going for the same things leading gaps.

Good to get the win as we were getting perilously close to bottom three.
I agree that the performance was vital and important that TE moved away from the 3 CB’s to a back 4. The team moving the ball forward a lot quicker.

It has been frustarting to watch the last 7 games, where we could all see what the problem was, yet TE kept making the same mistakes, and unwilling to change. This is where an experienced manager would have changed approach.

Let’s hope this is the turning point we have been waiting for, but we need to see games out over 90 minutes. Too often we fall off in the 2nd half.

There are still a lot of games to play and a 'Play Off' Spot is still not out of reach.

Was Danny Ings sold or did he leave or did he challenge rabbit hutch Ralph
Different view points I know.
Maybe he had an idea that his body couldn't cope and didn't want to rinse the club he supports.
Without him starting the rout at shatton park, we wouldn't have had the song.
Just a different angle of looking at it.

4 instead of 5 at the back
MUCH IMPROVED an ugly win.

Really good to see a back 4 and Ross and Shea back. Starting Wellington and Jelbert led to a big improvement though I did worry when I saw Manning coming on towards the end. In fairness Stephen’s did not do too much wrong last night though again he would not be my first choice.

We really could push on from here particularly if Fellows and Aziz occasionally hit the target. Scienza too could practice his aim but he is a stunning player nevertheless. If he stays fit Stewart will be a big plus for us as will Charles and I do hope Adam stays ideally even if we sign another taller striker as insurance.

Massive improvement in system and attitude against a poor Sheffield Utd side. Although Stephens did well I still think we need a new big centre half to complement THB. I'd be happy for Wood to make way and go out on loan. Similarly a big centre forward with Archer making room in the squad. If we get these and get rid of Aribo, Edozie, Fraser and Archer, I think we might be ok for a top half finish.

Just a note, three of the four best defences play with a traditional and regular back four - Ipswich, Middlesbrough and Stoke. OnlyPreston play with a back three.

The team selection was better, and the switch to a back four worked well. Getting Shea Charles back is a huge boost, and Ross Stewart’s return helps too. Even so, I still think we need to bring in a strong, physical No. 9 this window, someone who fits this system and can cover for Stewart if his injuries flare up again.

As for the crowd, it was quality rather than quantity. Everyone backed the team, and there was none of the usual sarcastic chanting that does more harm than good imo. I wish fans would save that sort of thing for the final whistle or stay home if they really can’t help themselves. Last night, though, the atmosphere was loud, positive, and supportive. That’s not ignoring the problems we know exist; it’s helping the team perform better and fight for every point.

There really aren't that many sides that can play with a back 5. You need specialist players to do it in particular very fast aggressive wing backs. We don't have that.

A back 4 is completely familiar to all players. They all know their roles inside out and that adds extra confidence from not having to worry too much about your team mates going out of position.

Superficially I think coaches are attracted to it because in transition the wing backs go up the pitch and that in theory creates an extra attacker. However a) we don't have specialist wingbacks who can put that amount of coverage in and b) our CB's and CDM's never radiate confidence that they know their own roles, which leads to the inevitable howlers

The sooner this failed experiment is cancelled the better.

Now we have shown we can win with a back 4, let's stick with that.

More than enough rain before the start turned accurate passing into a lottery, but we kept a clean sheet in the nd. A "flukey" goal from Scienza was enough to get the points.
Had we had VAR we might well have had a penalty for the "double fouling" on Fellows.
Whatever the tactical advantage of playing 3 at the back, I agree with others (above) in that I prefer playing 4 at the back - at least you know who should be where .
Good to see Stewart back on the pitch -even for 60 mins- as his height gives us a target man who can shoot, or hold up the ball when necessary.

Azaz missed another sitter last night, which would have put us 2-0 up and probably made the game a lot more comfortable.

He has missed quite a few really good chances over the season.

Well a back 4. Finally this Manager has seen the light and long may it continue. What a difference proper defenders like Wellington make. His selection has been long verdure.
Having a target man like Stewart will always gives team outlets and change our predictable pattern of play.
In the championship a team needs all players showing energy and grit and although Azaz is creative his work rate is poor and don’t start me off with the miss which would have given us breathing space.
I like a good number of supporters have been very negative of late which is born out of total frustration. I sincerely hope this is a turning point.
Finally SR make a couple of signings that could make a difference and I don’t mean peanut money!!

One swallow doesn't make a summer is the old adage but, this win was huge for morale and in readiness for Sunday. The back four with Jelert and Wellington both contributing positively (in fact, I thought Wellington was MoM) was much more effective than the three and wingbacks. Downes benefitted from being freed up to attack in this system and Stewart showed how much we've been missing a useful target man. Having listed the plusses I should mention that Sheff Utd looked a really weak side and, until we made changes towards the end and they added Bamford and Ings, they offered very little in attack. Although our play wasn't that joined up we did create a fair few chances but, spurned them (especially Fellows who needs to keep his head down). This meant we had to rely on our GK to rescue three points. A nod to Peretz for his save from Bamford. It's a start but, we'll see if the players really want it come Sunday.

Pluses where the clean sheet,3 points and a back 4
I enjoyed the link up between Wellington and Scienza It looks like a pairing to develop.Other than that the defence, the m/f and the forward line where like 3 separate units
Nobody had a poor game but nobody stood out for more than the odd move
I hope it has given confidence to the team for Sunday but to me they didn't look cocky enough

Agree with much of the above. Just to add that as well as the formation and personnel changes a noticeable difference was an improved attitude to get stuck in. It was Ross Stewart who set the tone by hassling the Utd CBs. The others seemed to respond and both Jander and Downes had their best games for a while.

Whether that was due to the changes on the pitch or in response to the “home truths” expressed after the Hull game we won’t know but it was welcome and will be needed for our next match.

Were we really watching the same game?
Yes H1 we did pretty well, but let’s be honest Leo’s shot was going nowhere but took a very fortunate deflection… and thanks very much.
But H2 I thought was no better than 50/50 in terms of better performance, and probably a lot worse, and were it not for Lady Luck and the Blades not having their shooting boots on we could well have been two or three down.
And even if they missed a few sitters, my God so did we - Aziz, AA and Leo at least a couple each…
Look, I am not trying to do a downer on the team. And a win is a (very welcome) win.
But is that really anything like required playoff, let alone automatic promotion, form?
No prizes for guessing what I think…

Wellington with Scienza is so much a better pairing than with Manning who just gets in the way and is the worst defender at the club.

Re Ings: he didn't know how things would play out when he left. Easy for us to talk about chasing money, but do we know that we would have done anything different than Ings given the incentives?
