Rest of the Championship thread by Hunterhoop 10 Aug 2024 11:07Toyed with this idea last season. Shall we have a thread to discuss, comment on, cover the rest of the league? A place to discuss other teams’ results, performances, financial implosions, etc?
For example, last night, anyone catch either of the first two games? I didn’t. But somewhat surprised/worried Blackburn scored 4 given how they are meant to struggle. Was it Derby being utter sh*te?
Sounds like Preston are continuing in the same vein of being incredibly dull.
Clive, what do you think? Worth making a sticky? Might reduce the number of threads to manage.

Their sponsorship income alone is significantly more than our entire income. With the PSR stuff, I think they can afford to spend a lot…although £19m is frankly ridiculous and obscene, because, as you say, there are many better things for Wrexham FC they could spend it on for their long term future. I thought they were aiming for play offs/promotion next season, but feel like they’re pressing the gamble button on winning the play offs this season. I really want us to beat them. Would be awful if they go up.

The next shiny thing comes along, as Disney loses interest when the fairytale looks like it will take too long and is too hard. Now the money has dried up, do they gamble (which they will stupidly do, I believe) and go for it, FFP be damned, or do they actually cut their cloth properly (which risks L1). Next season will be the real test as Moore will be another year older then.

They’ve built the club up as an asset to eventually sell as they’ve done successfully with other businesses. The Disney thing built the ‘brand’ and helped grow the value of the club but I don’t think it’s just a toy for them or they’d have given up when they struggled to get promoted early on. There can’t be many profitable clubs in our league. I’d guess they’re in a better financial state if they sold today than we or most clubs in the league are. Also interesting for me they backed the manager when there was a lot of pressure after a mediocre start and he’s proved people wrong including many of their fans. They have arguably overspent on some signings and I’m sure some hefty wages have gone on Moore and a few others but it’s not exactly a QPR under Redknapp situation and they’re well ahead of where I thought they’d be with that team.

Parkinson must be up there as one of the longest serving managers in English (Welsh...) football currently?

July ‘21 makes him joint-sixth. Harrogate’s manager has been there since 2009 and I doubt 1% of football fans could name him. I couldn’t until I just looked it up. Saying that, they’re crap.

They had a mid table championship wage bill already back in L2……they’re absolutely going to be right at the top of the table now on wages. As you say, the goal will be for the owners to unwind their positions in tranches and get down to a ‘vocational’ shareholding without it falling apart. As others have said though, the whole thing is underpinned and funded by companies jumping on the hypewagon and getting huge exposure through the tv show. If/when the Hollywood guys wind down their involvement and Disney disappear they will need to find someone willing to take over United’s £10m+ per season shirt sponsorship or they’ll inevitably fall back through the leagues. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not saying it will be this season but fully expecting Wrexham to be in the prem in the next few years or so. At that point it will be interesting if they can attract enough talent and be financially viable & within FFP to maintain it. They might have a few seasons of yo-yo but the way things are going I suspect they will be the next Brentford or Bournemouth. Just not being too disheartened if we lose to them... Said as they were climbing the leagues that the quicker they are out of the Championship the better for us.

This is why it's premier League or bust. A large part of their valuation is actually wrapped up in the owners themselves. Does the Netflix show still have the eyeballs if Joe Smith owns the club not Ryan Reynolds? Smart potential buyers will realize the value of their purchase decreases the second they buy it and they are left with a ludicrous wage bill and are underwater on cost. That goes out the window if it's a premier League club though

Bit of a slog of a game but they were the better side over the course of it. Terrible from O’Leary the goalkeeper who they’ve just signed from Bristol City (of Paul Smyth halfway line fame). Derby drop points in the race to be the 19th worst team in the league.

150 league appearances too. Look at Kone, do we give players that kind of time and space to develop?
