The 1945-51 Labour government introduced prescription charges (partly to make up for the costs of Britain's involvement in the Korean war).


The 1949 NHS Amendment Act introduced the power to charge for prescriptions but it wasn’t until 1952 that the first charge of one shilling was introduced under a Tory government.
