I don't feel Walsh has been anything like as poor as some posters say. He's made plenty of good saves, often by spreading himself well. I thought he was poor at Southampton but otherwise too many off the goals conceded can be attributed more to those in front of him than the keeper himself.
At 23, which is youngish for a keeper, he has plenty of potential to improve. |
Unfortunately too many have been down to him. A defence needs to be confident in the keeper behind them neither Walsh or Nardi, with his weakness on crosses, provide the necessary assurance.
Walsh May improve, age is on his side but he is not ready to be the number one, in a championship side, at this stage of his career. They need to bite the bullet and bring one in who is. |  |

I’ve not always wanted every manager or player we’ve signed, but I’ve always tried to get behind them 100%. I just can’t with Walsh.
Goalkeeper is not a position you gamble with. A good keeper, like Paddy Kenny, can win you points on his own over a season turning defeats into draws and draws into wins in games you probably lose on balance. Even an average Championship level keeper can do a solid job.
Playing Walsh as number one in the Championship in the hope a League One or League Two club eventually bids for him so we make a relatively small profit is madness. Send him out on loan to League Two, let him learn his trade, gain experience, and maybe he’ll become a decent / great keeper in the future.
Having an experienced, half-decent keeper wouldn’t hurt our model it would help it. Younger outfield players become worth more when they’re competing higher up the table instead of constantly losing games.
If you had to carry a weak link in a 4-4-2, not many people would choose the goalkeeper position. You’d probably hide it on the wing instead?
Why risk relegation and lose millions just to potentially make a few hundred thousand? Loan him out, let him improve, and bring him back stronger. It’s not Walsh’s fault it’s the model. But including the goalkeeper in that model, when it’s not working is just stubborn and not best for anyone. |  | | |
